Marquette Gold!

Hahahahahhahahaha

 That’s just pitiful.

Their students seem enthused.

How can the name warrior be an affront to anything or anyone? What is the negative connotation of warrior?

Never have a nickname that is not plural!

Marquette Gold is terible. Is this a joke?

 :lmao:

What an assinine move by the MU Board of Trustees. It appears from the story that the powers were less than concerned with any name the students wanted.

They are now the Gold, they don’t have a mascot and since their student section is the Gold Rush, can’t we send them one of the old Norm the Niner costumes?

At the same time, I hearby make the request that the name of our fine institution be renamed to The University of Charlotte and the nickname be replaced. We should return as the Owls. clt could be the first one in the costume and he could swoop down from the rafters in Halton before games (as well as flap druing the contest).

Any takers?

Okay. Name one.

Remember this team?

I have a hard time believing that the alumni is happy about this name change. If Charlotte changed their name to Green, there would be a grand backlash.

The Gold sounds like a woman’s team name.

Was the Bling already taken?

Are they joining the WNBA? Why not go back to warrior and use symbols from the gladiator time if the Native Americans are so offended by the use of a spear.

That might offend students with Italian heritage. The only mascot you can choose nowadays without offending SOMEBODY is an animal, insect, vegetable, or an inanimate object.

Not so fast, I heard that an official complaint has been filed by the silver and that gray will be protesting as well.

I looking forward to the Orange and Gold game next year!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Introducing the Marquette University’s New Mascot…

University President Father Robert A. Wild "said he didn't believe alumni would withhold donations to the university."

Their alumni are not very bright if they embrace this name. Of course, the Milwaukee Journal online poll is running 93%-7% against the new name, so maybe the school administration are just plain dumb.

The school already has that obnoxious “WE ARE MARQUETTE” printed in huge letters are their basketball court, I guess that will change to “WE ARE GOLD”.

Hopefully, no one at Charlotte ever gets an idea this stupid. The only possible name they could ever consider (IMO) is Owls, because of this previous school connection to the name.

Talk 'bout a program in a tailspin! MU is a fraud. They won’t be sniffing the NCAA for a long time. My wife is an MU alumn and she thinks the Warrior name is the only real name for MU. Myles Brand must be eating out in Milwaukee to much. Talk about milk-toast thinking.

It’s crap like this that makes me oh so glad to be a Niner!

Wow, talk about a head-scatcher!!! :o

I’ve gotta feeling that President Wild and the MU Board will be backtracking on this one very soon…

Maybe they can get together with Cornell and Dartmouth and have a Color Tournament. I can see the previews now: The college basketball tournament for spectrum supremacy!!!

But just think of all the marketing and sponsorship possibilities…

“The official beverage of the Marquette Gold!”

“The official automobile of the MU Gold!”

"The official bling-bling of the MU Gold!

I’m not sure why they didn’t just call themselves the Golden Warriors … and have it be some kind of Christian connotation (since that is the mission of the school). If you come up with some sort of religious mascot, then people get their Warriors nickname but it doesn’t offend anyone (presumably).

Sounded like a win-win opportunity to reconnect with the past and push the Jesuit message of the school.

For example, the Golden State Warriors … their mascot is just some dude with lightning. Not offensive to anyone (except possibly those with good taste).
