United Celtics point guard Marquis Rankin has the tools and speed to becoming one of the top point guards in his class in the Southeast. The 5-foot-11 guard from Charlotte (N.C.) Vance does a great job of advancing the basketball and his burst to the basket was one of the best of any age group on Saturday. The class of 2011 prospect scored a team high 18 points in a big win over a talented Boo Williams club.
Rankin said he has heard from Clemson, Richmond, Wake Forest, Kansas, NC State, Charlotte and others early in the process.
Starting to bust out and probably go beyond our reach. Word on the street is he is a frekish athlete. Measured 5’9" but had a flat footed dunk during Challenge.
If we can just land one of the local area studs every other year we would be set. I do not care if that is including kids transferring back in after the ACCX over recruits back over them the next year.
Rankin:
Of all these 2011 prospects, Marquis Rankin stood out with the most impressive day. He showed a speed and quickness that may rival that of Ishmael Smith, but the shooting and dunking ability of a more polished all-around player. He seemed to score at will throughout the day, including a sweet stroke from beyond the arc, several big dunks, and nice driving ability. For a high school sophomore, he is an impressively complete package. Although most players played to showcase their offense, Rankin also showed that he can get down and play defense, and his confidence and flair on the court was not overdone but clearly noticeable.
"“I hear a lot from Wake, Clemson, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Charlotte. I have been hearing from colleges since my freshman year in high school. To be honest, it is a bit overwhelming to be so young and getting so much attention. My dad and I talk about recruiting a lot and I am kind of looking forward to getting the process over with. I want to decide on a college by the end of my junior year at the latest.”
Fellow Vance and United Celtics backcourt mate Jacoby Davis also put on his speed skates and glided up and down the court for buckets. The 6-footer from the class of 2011 added 17 points in the victory. Davis rattled off a list of Charlotte, Clemson, Richmond and Baylor.

So far, Rankin has scholarship offers from Wake, Georgia Tech, Charlotte and Louisiana Tech. Robinson, whose teams have won 100 games in his four seasons at Vance, said Virginia Tech is “seriously recruiting” Rankin.
Evaluation
September, 2009: Rankin is a quick and speedy point guard who can really push the ball foul line to foul line with speed and his head/eyes up looking to advance it to an open teammate. He possesses a second gear of speed that blows by defenders off the dribble. His bread and butter dribble move is the cross-over dribble (left to right) as he goes in a north/south direction that leaves defenders standing still. He is a capable 3-point shooting who needs to become more consistent behind the line. In pick/roll situations he waits on the screen like good point guards should then attacks the big man and score or delivers the assist. His basketball IQ is high as he knows how much time is on the clock when he shot a half court bomb with a second to go and drained it. Defensively he can pick up 94’ and needs to turn his man more in the back court. Off the ball he anticipates passing lanes well and has a knack for the steal. He brings energy and excitement to his team.
