Melvin Johnson - 2012 PG/SG

6’3 combo guard from NYC. Prepping this year at St. Benedict’s in NJ.

Have heard we are interested in him, not sure how much at this point. We’ll see if he’s at the Elite Camp on Saturday.

Strengths:Johnson's ability to shoot the ball is very impressive. He has a smooth and confident stroke off the catch or dribble. He runs the outside lane on the break and if the transition defense falls asleep he rarely misses open spot up threes when his feet are set. He spaces to the open area and comes off screens ready to pull the trigger. Johnson has good size and uses it when he straight line drives to the rim where he can score through contact. He plays with urgency on defense as well. He is in a stance and is capable of defending both wing positions.Weaknesses: Johnson must add strength and continue to hone his skills in the areas of passing on the move and ball handling under pressure. Johnson is a good athlete and could be a more productive rebounder as well.Bottom Line: Johnson is a true shooting guard with a confident stroke and range to the arc off the catch or dribble. He has good size to score on straight line drives and slashes and finish through contact. He must continue to build his game skill wise and has great upsideNotesTravel Team: Long Island Lightning...

Wow! When I was in School (way back during the last Milennium), I remember we had a player with the last name of Johnson for several years in a row. Included was one of the better athletes we’ve ever had…Melvin Johnson! A guard in a forwards body. I would love some Deja vu!

Melvin Johnson - wasted during the Pratt and Wissel years!!! Whatever happened to him? Actually taken by Chicago Bulls in 1984 in the 4th round, an NBA draft which the Bulls also took some other guy with the initials MJ as well!

Anyone else fondly remember Delano Johnson (PG). I still think we could have made a deep run into NCAA tourney if he hadn’t got mono before the tournament. He had amazing drive and dish ability that was unstoppable.

we’re still recruiting Johnson and sounds like we’ve offered. We’ll see what happens if we don’t land Lester…

sounds like a good backup plan if we dont get lester.

Yes, he was a solid little player.
