Memphis Game Notes, Newspaper Articles GAME NOTES: #21 Charlotte Hosts Memphis, Wednesday Tigers to face No. 21 Charlotte Wednesday Tigers vs 49’ers is MUCH more than just another game!

Memphis at Charlotte, 7:30 p.m. ET

The Tigers have bullied their way into the NCAA Tournament picture by winning six of their last seven, but considering their awful start and shoddy RPI, every game is important. This visit to Charlotte gives Memphis another opportunity to prove its growing pains are over. The 49ers are nationally ranked and feature forwards Eddie Basden and Curtis Withers, who are playing as well as any in the country. Conference Clashes

The 49ers are tied with Louisville in the loss column for the Conference USA title chase. Memphis is very much alive for an NCAA berth. Beating Charlotte on the road would go a long way toward convincing the committee that the Tigers are worthy of a bid. The Weekly Watch: Five Games to Watch

From the Memphis Commercial-Appeal (site registration required):

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- They have a serviceable point guard, a dead-on shooting guard, a lock-down small forward, a dominant power forward and a center who is a legitimate presence in the paint.

In other words, Charlotte isn’t bad, and far from a fluke. The No. 21 next to its name isn’t by accident.

But if the University of Memphis wants to keep its late-season surge going, then it must find a way to upset the 49ers (19-4, 10-2 C-USA) tonight here at Halton Arena.

KEY MATCHUP: Rodney Carney vs. Eddie Basden

Though Carney and Francisco Garcia get most of the attention as the best wings in Conference USA, an argument can be made that Basden is more productive. Basden is Charlotte’s do-everything guy, and might be the leading candidate for C-USA Player of the Year if voters really focused on statistics. Either way, he’s a virtual lock for Defensive Player of the Year, which is what will make this matchup huge. Lately, nobody has stopped Carney, who’s averaging 25.3 points in his last three outings. But can Basden do it? He’s shut down most everybody else. If he adds Carney to his list of victims, it will be difficult for Memphis to win.
