Men's hoops coaching carousel

This is what Lutz should do or be forced to do. This guy was Coach of the Year 2 yrs ago in the ACC and now… This is the world we live in. Lutz is milking the university because he knows they are too lazy to go out and find someone else. I have to respect Leitao and UVA because they want more for their University and their Alumni.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Dave Leitao has resigned as Virginia’s men’s basketball coach after the team’s worst season in decades, according to an athletic department official familiar with the decision.

The person requested anonymity because the official announcement was to be made later Monday.

Virginia finished 10-18 this season, 11th in the Atlantic Coast Conference. It was the Cavaliers’ worst record since they went 9-17 in 1967-68.

Leitao won the ACC coach of the year award in 2007, when Virginia shared first place in the conference with North Carolina, but compiled a 63-60 record in his four years.

Milking the university? Huh? After being COY, with somebody else’s players, how has he done with his recruits in his 3rd and 4th years? Has Leitao had to go through a downgrade of conference? Has he not had the money to get and retain the assistants he’s needed without turnover at Virginia? Has he had to worry about them jumping ship to BCS schools?

Yes, Leitao is a pretty good coach, but he had one NCAA appearance at DePaul sandwiched between two NIT appearances. Look at what he did at Northeastern the last year he was there back in the 90’s. Lutz was 3-1 against him, with Lutz’s only loss coming in the season we do not speak of. Could it be that Virginia jumped on an unproven coach too soon?

No it could be that they don’t accept mediocrity in Men’s basketball.

They’ve been to the Dance 3 times in the last 14 seasons after having gone 12 times in the 15 seasons prior, with the arguably the best conference to use as a recruiting tool. If that’s not mediocrity, I don’t know what is.

Look for Sean Miller to go to UVA.

I’m not saying historically, but as of now.

You think? I know UVA has a new arena, but he has a pretty sweat deal at Xavier.

If Mark Few leaves Gonzaga for Arizona, as some speculate, and Sean Miller leaves Xavier for Virginia, it will be a significant dilemma for the non-power conference contingency.

:lmao:

is it more than 0% chance that Lutz has contemplated resigning?

In firing the former ACC COY two years after the award, they either think they have a bigger fish hooked or they think they made a bad choice in Leitao. My guess is the former, but Leitao has not stayed anywhere long enough to see how he does when his entire team is comprised of his recruits.

I think a potential choice for the UVA job is Anthony Grant from VCU.

I could see them wanting Capel, but what can UVA give him that Oklahoma can’t? I know he is from the ACC, but that is the only reason I would think he would even consider the move.

Housten Fancher is out at ASU. He was 136-135 in 9 seasons. The Ad is saying it was a mutual agreement, fancher’s people are saying differently. Consensus is that he was a good guy who graduated his players and repped the U well, but was not the guy to take us to a new lvl, and wasn’t a particularly good recruiter either, search starts immediately, haven’t heard of many candidates yet.

Based on what? He’s at the point now with Xavier that he’s just reloading every season, not rebuilding. Not saying that Miller would never leave Cincy, but it would have to be for something like Pitt, not UVa. Just my 2 cents…

Lutz has been at Charlotte so long that I don’t understand this concept of a “new lvl”.

Can you elaborate a little bit? What does this mean?

Meanwhile, I will be doing my good deed for the day. I am on the phone with AAA as I type. Thought I’d be nice and order TripTiks from Charlotte, NC to Boone, NC and Charlotte to Charlottesville and have them mailed to Mr. Lutz’ office.

I agreee, Miller only leaves for Pitt unless there is a significant change in how things are done at Xavier. The only way I see an opening at Pitt is if Jamie Dixon leaves for the Arizona job, which isn’t out of the question since he is a west coast guy (like Ben Howland).

He did the right things except didn’t win big. Back when Bobby Cremins was the coach in the late 70s he never brought a recruit in to see a game played due to the unpredictable weather. It’s probably still the same, it would be a hard sell to recruit basketball players to Boone.

well, we are a little less ambitious in our expectations for our program than you guys are here, we realize that basketball receives less attention at ASU than it does at Charlotte, Fancher did good in beating several high-profile programs in UVA (the year leitao won COY in ACC I think), Vandy, Arkansas. But he wasn’t able to parlay his success into any Conference championships or NCAA appearances. He would also follow decent wins with embarrassing losses like to Elon or something. It really was his inconsistency I think that cost him the job. Plus, football has set the bar very high, and both students and alumni expect more from the entire athletic department, baseball is turning corners (just lost 9-8 to UNC) and we have a young coach we are very excited about, we just hired a new coach in WBB that was a Nat’l Chamion DIII I believe so we will be looking to turn that program around, T&F is usually pretty solid for us, and we have a new Soccer Coach (last one was extremely disliked by his players) and a new facility is bringing more excitement to that program, which used to be very strong for us. There are two reasons why I think that basketball should be stronger for us, one is that we have one of the nicer facilities in the SoCon, and two we have enjoyed a lot of publicity over the past few years, so when recruits from out of our region used to be like ‘Appa-who?’ Now are at least familiar with the school (even though its only because we beat Michigan).

Like I said, Fancher is considered a great guy, never embarrassed the University, and was consistently in the top 10% of schools in graduation rate (because none of our players were leaving early to get drafted thats for sure, lol) but he just lacked something that we now expect at ASU.

I was thinking the same thing about Grant and Capel. UVA may want a more proven coach than Grant given UVA is in the mighty ACC. I think the ACC lure may be enough to bring Capel back. OU can pay Capel to stay, question is if will they will. Capel may hold out for Duke. Not sure of that situation since Dawkins left for Stanford.

I just wish our mens hoops team could reach the bar set by the womens team.

I’m not sure I’ll be able to wait for football to set the bar.
