Men's Tennis Coach Boiken(Billy) Resigns

Billy is awesome! I wish him the best.

He’s done an outstanding job for men’s tennis and I’m sure it was tough for him to leave. It upsets me that Queens pays better than Charlotte at the Non-Rev level(assuming it was for higher pay as I know he loves Charlotte). I was considering a position there during my tenure because it would’ve doubled my salary so I certainly understand why.

Billy will crush it there and Coach Tarr is the perfect candidate to take the reigns. I’m extremely excited to see his debuet as the head coach.

Men’s Tennis (along with golf and m soccer) has been a huge bright spot for Men’s athletics.

Is it common for a D1 school to lose a head coach to a D2 school?

I would really like to know what happened here.

One of our programs that actually won. Legacy coach. Has seen facilities increase in status more than any program on campus. Goes to D2…

The only thing I can come up with was maybe he hated flying, didn’t like the travel associated with cusa??

My personal thoughts are the following:

Queens & Wingate will pay higher and have better budgets for the non-revenues, they also have easier recruiting rules being D2.

Charlotte will 99% of the time wish you well vs. giving you a raise/ counter another school’s offer(or said counter would not come close to offer)

Much less stress and frustration and much more love and support at D2/ private colleges.

I didn’t even get an email saying congrats when I coached my first all american (I never held a grudge but was a bit saddened, however, I chalk it up to non-involvement in several sports from the ad side).

In the past three years there have been more coaching/ staff changes (mostly self resignations) than probably the previous 20 years combined for all sports.

IMHO the coaches would benefit from an administration that followed each sport like a passionate fan… Reward performing programs/ coaches and bring in top Power 5 assistants to improve struggling programs.

Cultivate and develop a winning environment for every program.

Put real incentives out there.

If I was AD and making $200k+ a year I’d put up $3-$5k of my own money per program for a Conference Championship until I found boosters to put together an incentive plan for the programs. I’d also put a $10k bounty for a NCAA Championship (I’d seek for boosters to match me in my own funds that I put up and that money would generate some serious interest and be able to pay for itself like an endowd scholarship). I’d also have additional NCAA appearance and athlete recognition bonuses(CUSA MVPs, Scholar athlete/ teams etc… None of this currently exists.

I’d also invest serious time into team travel schedules, I’d probably micro manage a little but my hope is that I would convey that I care about their success.

Again just my thoughts… And it’s easy for me throw out ideas without having to own up to them, but, it really is what I’d do.

Back to the thread, Billy will have Queens in the NCAA D2 semi- finals within 3 years crushing it.

Coach Tarr will carry the torch and take the Niners to even greater heights until he gets poached too. He’s a great guy and coach and loves him some Niners!
