Mid-Major discussion

Lol… Pick axe digest called Charlotte a Mid major program…
Lol… Pick axe digest called Charlotte a Mid major program…
We are.

Major programs don’t miss the NCAA tournament for 8 years in a row.

Major programs don’t play in conferences that will get 3 teams into the tournament in an exceptional once in a decade year.

Major programs don’t pay their head coach a half million a year.

Oh I agree… It’s funny how just a few years ago you’d have been stabbed in the neck for saying that

This. I have posted before that we USED to ALL AGREE that we were NOT a mid-major, but now almost everyone accepts it. :frowning:

Well this thing called the “BCS” started, maybe you have heard of it… add to that our suckyness the last 8 years now and that’s Mid-Major by defenition, and yes I hate it also…

Maybe if Ogbueze chooses Charlotte, we won’t have to have these types of discussions.

Wonder how his visit went…

Mid major is really about conference affiliation more so then anything else. The exceptions would be Gonzaga and Memphis, because they both were successful at a high major level.

The new CUSA is mid-major. A10 basketball was not.

For most of the nation if you aren’t/weren’t in one of the BCS leagues you were a mid-major. I know we see a distinction between A10/MWC/CUSA/SunBelt - but the general public does not. In all honesty I thought we could make a case for not being midmajor in CUSA 1.0 because their were national title threats in that league. Once we left CUSA I accepted the midmajor title.

This thread is not about Major being a Mid level coach at keeping his players here. I call fraud.

Who cares what we are. Just win.

I don’t see the point in recognizing the distinction. What practical purpose does it serve? (Maybe… to have the ability to identifiy (have definitions for) “mid-major” and “low-major” could be usefull to some, like recruits or members of The Tournament Selection Committee or something, but the way it (always) gets talked about here is pointless.)

Reminds me of the (lack of) school spirit thread, apathetic-tar-hole-wannabe types admitting how Charlotte wasn’t their first choice. Boohoo.

And the (heavily praised) (douchebag) ESPN piece on how high school-like Robert Morris’s gym was… just before they beat the big, bad, mighty Kentucky Wildcats. OOOooooooooooo.

Does it still make sense to hear a commentator say, “These Florida Gulf Coast kids aren’t afraid of anybody”?
No. No way. It sounds old and stupid. Why the fuck would they be afraid?

No “case” had to be made in CUSA 1.0. We were NOT considered a “mid-major” by anyone during those years. This was not even a discussion back then.

"suckiness’ has nothing to do with the “mid-major” title. I hear commentators all the time calling Gonzaga and Butler, etc. “mid-majors”. If it did, schools like Northwestern and Clemson would be “mid-majors”.

The Mid Major is the newest haircut fad.

I would think based on our recent history, we’d be debating whether we were high mid or not.

It’s stupid terminology. Where does that logic put Northwestern and Wake Forest? Low-High majors? Certainly they’re not on the same level as a Alabama or Michigan.

The logic should be BCS and Non-BCS. But people will still want to use the term Mid-major.
