Probably never. Still a decent chance the PAC takes Memphis and Tulane, and at that point the conferences tv value will be no better than sbc/sunbelt level.
As long as Navy and Army are in the league our TV will be ok. Both have more eyeballs than either Memphis or Tulane. If we had been able to pull Air Force it would have increased. Sevice schools are big tv
How much are Army and Navy worth to the AAC coffers? Since their annual game isnāt a conference tilt, do they get to divide those TV proceeds among themselves?
Just curious
In Hunterās podcast this week, he said something very interesting, that when our AD hired Biff, Hunter asked who was heā¦ā¦. And our AD sent him the link to the HBO documentary, is that a bit odd for communicating to the Press who we chose as our HC??
HBO is great!, but it is an Entertainment company, not really a recommendation source for hiring the highest paid position on a college campus.
Not sure what youāre saying here. The HBO thing no secret and for whatever reason Poggi didnāt have bio page on UMās website.
BTW, our ADās name is Mike Hill.
Is anyone still in on this guy? Cannot believe he got an extension
Heās terrible.
Canāt raise money. And thatās the crux of everything. At the end of the day thatās what did Judy in and thatās where we still are. And money is more important than ever.
How do you expect people to trust you with their money if all you do is make poor decisions?
Heās made 1 terrible coaching hire in Biff, a poor choice in Will and an unlucky one with Ron.
At this point Iām going to put Fearnes problem with lack of talent. I think the new womens coach is terrible tho. We shall see.
Outside of Ron, lack of money was involved with hiring both Biff and Will and their staffs.
If we had more cash flow the coaching candidates would have been better and in todayās game the talent would be better.
You can make the argument we can cut sports or half ass something like baseball or soccer - but personally I donāt feel thatās fair to sports that actually have been winning. We donāt over invest in those sports IMO, we proper invest. Especially now with those student athletes actually caring about our university. Hell now thatās where Iām donating all my money exclusively directing it away from basketball and football.
From an admin pov I think heās done fine. From conference move to rebranding to being present with within the city I think he gets high marks.
It all comes down to money. We need more and his job as an AD is to convince more people, new people and new companies to jump on. For things to turn around - especially now with NIL money is going to have to come in before we see measurable success.
Honestly, nothing else he has done comes close to mattering as much as this IMO.
In the NIL era, this is all that matters anymore. Feelings, morality, tradition, coachingā¦ All of it either doesnāt matter at all or is a very distant second.
If any of us ever want to be relevant again, we need a fundraiser like Nido Qubein at High Point, but dedicated to athletics. Otherwise, nothing else matters.
We need a $4MM-$5MM annual NIL fund to compete the way we want to in Basketball and Football. Split a out 20-33% hoops and 67-80% football. Nothing short of that will establish relevancy again.
I think once nil comes in house we will see
Conference payouts and probably the gambling money be used for nil. That should be around 800k-1m from aac and around 5m from sports betting payout. Thats gets you to your 5-6 mil.
Now the problem is we still have to make up that difference with the operating budget that was counting on the aac payout.
I know it is the way of the world now but G5 schools paying out NIL is like a consistent money losing corporation paying out dividends.
that is the response to those that say we shouldnāt play āpayā games any longer.
I just fail to see where I come into this, why I should donate money, or have season tickets anymore?
Mid major programs will continue to win with or without NIL/portal. We arenāt one of them and this all falls on Mike. We need to change our slogan to āCharlotte Athletics, where the scoreboard doesnāt matter.
Gaber drew the line. She doesnāt give a damn about football/basketball. Itās depressing, but weāre all used to losing at this point.
No idea who we end up hiring, but serious question:
Can any athletic director at a program keep his job after permanently hiring interim coaches from prior staffs in your two most important sports?
Would anyone take this person seriously if they did?
The answer is no
No.
Iām still not convinced Fearne was a bad hire.
He had so much more talent to work with last year.
I like Fearne. He has 1000x more substance to him than Sanchez ever did. For all the talk about Sanchez being good on paper his only qualification was being a top assistant at a good program. Listen to him for five mins and you knew he was completely full of shit. Fearne on the other hand sounds a lot more like a real coach.
Iām just not convinced he was the best we could have gotten and his recruiting ability is still unknown.
