Come on now. Boise state has one loss. On the road. To the undefeated, number one overall team. By a single field goal. They deserve to be there.
Yes they do and didnât say otherwise. And Army deserved a more prestigious bowl.
That was runs way disputing that the AAC is the best G5.
If the PAC teams win their lawsuit to lessen or throw out their exit fees, Memphis and Tulane will be gone in a heartbeat and the AAC will be no better than the SBCâŚunless we can steal the best SBC teams.
Some years it may be, some years not. Itâs a legit league that can get a playoff spot. This year though, Boise was unquestionably the best G5.
5000 donating 100 each is $500,000âŚthatâs not significant at all in todayâs world.
For exampleâŚTell me exactly what $500,000 (which we donât get from individual donors) would get us in one calendar year.
1 G5 level QB and a solid WR?
A couple of good G5 level basketball players?
AndâŚWill that win us a Conference titleâŚmake a bowl game or make the NCAA tourney??? Thatâs a big ol fat hairy nope.
Itâs a complete waste of time and resources. Smart people see thatâŚand wonât donate (throw away) their hard earned money towards it.
Need to get 7,500-10,000 alumni donating $25/mo. Thatâs $2,250,000 - $3,000,000 a year. Then you need to double that through corporate / private individuals major contributions.
That will not compete with Bama and Georgia but would put us at the top end of the G5.
That should be the goal and job of the AD, but this is way off topic.
One minute Iâm tempted to give to the collective then I come to my senses.
Itâs money down the toilet.
How can you have an honest competition when fans of teams are allowed to throw massive money at their programs.
There is no equality of resources. There is no dependable and projectable level of revenue. Itâs all at the whim of the donor.
There is no actual reason that this form of NIL exists.
Itâs nothing but vanity.
NIL as itâs supposed to exist is fine. But itâs been perverted by the âmarketâ.
Collective giving is actually kind of gross.
Should a person who has money to give not give it to the actual general fund of their university or some other deserving charity?
Someone said on another thread that there is the hope of making NIL donations tax deductible.
Thats beyond the pale. That would make a collective donation equal in the eyes of the law to a donation the St. Judeâs childrenâs.
Itâs bad enough that college sports are not self sustainable.
If my donation goes to keeping the program going I can see it.
But a donation to go into some players pocket when they are already getting money for education?
Count me out.
Itâs ridiculous.
Moved the NIL etc discussion to this thread. Carry on!
IRS rules now revolve around whether the organization is a 501(c)(3) or not. Some early NIL funds obtained that status. If we were to funnel all of our funds through the Athletic foundation then redistribute them it may be an end around, but I donât believe our collective has nonprofit status.
Even if it does, tax deductions for NIL will come to an end, sooner rather than later. Paying players is not a charitable purpose and mark it down, some of these organizations may end up with charges of defrauding the IRS.
The IRS chief counsel issued a memo on this last year. Iâd expect them to wait until near the end of statute of limitations to get max penalties against NIL organizations operating as nonprofits whose primary purpose is to pay players.
You can read the memo here:
An extremely credentialed coach at Arkansas State, Butch Jones, was given 3 years and continues to coach to this day. Only made a bowl in his third year. Biffâs record was better than Butch in his first 2 years. And, Biff had less coaching experience and competed in a tougher conference.
Butch Jones coached at the University of Tennessee and other reputable programs before joining Arkansas State in the Sun Belt. Compare his results to Biff (see below).
I firmly believe Biff âchallengedâ our administration and got on the wrong side. Biff wanted to win and bring success to Charlotte. Iâm aware that Biff had an extended leave during the summer but apparently that was not an issue since he continued to coach all but the last 2 games.
I hear only generalities beyond that. For example, Biff gave up. His heart wasnât in it. His team quit. He did not want to be here. Perhaps if that is the case, we should ask why he did not want to be here. Did he determine we were not really intersted in pursuing success and doing what it took to get there.
Donât get me wrong, I was disappointed when Biff was hired. However, I became a fan. His goals for the program were always spot on until the very end. I feltbhe was in his way. His 3rd year would have had us in a bowl with a winning record.
For whatever reason, it gives the strong appearance that our leadership is comfortable just being average. Perhaps this is being encouraged from above. As a result, Biff was probably not a fit here. Biff was not a puppet. He has made his money. It appears that our leadership is obligated to âbe satisfied with being OK.â Perhaps they cherish their job and paycheck more than their desire for success at Charlotte and only in pursuit of the metrics they have been given. For that, I do not necessarily blame them.
Biff would not accept that. I suppose we should just accept being like the other âUNCâ system schools - Greensboro, Wilmington, Pembroke, etc. That is, until we get leaders that are not âoverlyâ submissive to the UNC system oversight.
When Biff was here, we had hope. There is no way someone like Biff would be allowed to be successful here. We should have given Biff a minimum of 3 years to prove his work - very much like Arkansas State just gave their coach.
Apparently, we had the extra millions laying around to pay Biff for the next few years after he was fired. That money could have served us better elsewhere.
See the reference below to Butch Jones/Arkansas State.
On December 12, 2020, Jones was hired to become the 34th head coach at Arkansas State University, replacing Blake Anderson, who left Arkansas State to become the head coach at Utah State University.[65][66] In the 2021 season, Jones went 2â10.[67] The two wins for the Red Wolves marked the fewest in a single season since 2001.[68] In the 2022 season, Jones led the team to a 3â9 mark.[69] In the 2023 season, Jones led the team to a 6â6 regular season mark and a berth in the Camellia Bowl.[70]
Thats 500000 of additional nil. Im not saying that amount as our our entire nil. That in addition to what we are currently offering but 500k in hoops at our level is extremely significant
I hope you dont actually believe that. Biff sucked. He was lazy and incompetent as a coach and the program was toxic ubder his watch, and he was clueless on how to run a program. The hope you speak of was gone once people realized that he couldnât coach. He had essentially quit by year 2
If he was lazy, toxic, and incompetent (all subjective by the way), why did Michigan immediately welcome Biff back after we fired him?
Perhaps our decades of failure in our 2 major sports is not because the coaches all suck. Could it be something else?
Not itâs not. Itâs 2 guysâŚmaybe. For 1 season.
UhhhhhâŚmaybe because heâs not their head coach and is just a glorified baby sitter??
Big difference.
Your defense of a guy that obviously did nothing but piss off admin, piss off donors and left his team for the Summer to go on a vacay to ItalyâŚall confirmed via multiple sources by the wayâŚis very confusing. Especially considering he only beat 4 FBS teams in 2 years (actually 3 because he beat ECU twice).
The reason we hired Biff was due to his efforts at Michigan. No way we hired him on his high school coaching credentials.
Interesting that Michigan still sees value and welcomed him back immediately. Could year 3 have been special? Perhaps. Certainly better than starting over prematurely.
Letâs compare Biff to Butch Jones (Arkansas State).
Year 1 - Biff won 3 / Butch won 2
Year 2 - Biff won 5 / Butch won 3
Year 3 - Biff (will never know) / Butch won 6 (bowl)
Iâm giving Biff credit for the last 2 games since they were easier opponents in our conference and Biffâs team won.
Why not let this play out and see if Biffâs positive trend continues in year 3?
When Biff was hired we were warned we would have to give him time. It would not be overnight. Biff would have to learn. Biff was not taking over a successful program.
Biff was trending in the right direction. Now we start over.
For the 4,623,117,933 timeâŚ
HE PISSED OFF THE ADMIN
HE PISSED OFF DONORS
HE LEFT THE TEAM ALL SUMMER
IT DOESNâT MATTER IF HE WON 10 GAMESâŚTHATâs NOT WHAT ANYONE WANTS IN A HEAD COACH
OhâŚand on top of all of thatâŚ
HE ONLY BEAT 3 FBS TEAMS IN 2 YEARS
Just stop it. Stop itâŚfor the love of all that is holyâŚstop it.
This.
I donât mind donating to give kids an education. But I absolutely wonât donate to just pay a kid who is already getting all of that for free.
There are so many other smarter uses of the money. Everyone is entitled to give your money how you see fit, but I just canât give to an agency that is paying players. Just on campus something like the student pantry is a better place to donate.
Iâm sure if the Panthers had a fund to donate to to sign a top free agent some folks would donate, but it sure wouldnât be me.
Havenât seen anything about Poggi being rehired by Michigan. And yes, I know he made a visit and attended a game in Ann Arbor after getting the pink slip in UCity.
This is the last thing that I could find on Poggi, âFans were hoping once Poggi announced he would be back in Ann Arbor this past weekend, Michigan would lock him up for a coaching role for years to come. And while that still could happen, the Wolverines will be preparing for Ohio State without Poggi on the staff, it appears.â
