The area of North Tryon in between Uptown and U City is the eleventh most dangerous neighborhood in America. Chevee do you still work in this area? Hope you’re wearing neutral gang colors!
I learned from the Observer that if you wear Caroline Blew colors in this area, you’ll be safe. Everyone loves Tarheels!!!
I totally believe that. Every single time I go downtown by route of Tryon it’s time to lock the doors. Have you seen how many hoods hang out under that bridge right before downtown? Crazzzy.
I go to the Bojangle’s there a lot. It is a pretty sketch part of town.
I don’t believe this at all. I’d much rather be in that area than some other spots in charlotte like Brookhill Village, Barrington Dr, a lot of the Belmont neighborhood, Boulevard Homes, ect.
I’m assuming you go to the really nice Bojo’s on N Tryon right near Harris Blvd. That’s not the area this article is talking about. Go down to the Bojangles near Atando Avenue. THAT’S a skecthy part of town, and that’s the neighborhood this article is referring to.

I know that Bojangles. Been there once…never again.
I’ve been spending some time in Belmont/Optimist Park/Villa Heights lately… Shannon is working on a theoretical revitalization project in that area, and we’re starting to get involved in some real-life efforts in the area.
Those neighborhoods look a lot worse than they really are. I’m not saying I’d go for a stroll after dark down there, but I don’t feel unsafe being down there during the day at all. I’d rather be there than Hidden Valley any day.

Belmont is having a ton of money poured into it for sure. Its still extremely sketchy. Even in a place like Seigle Point, although 100 times better than the old Piedmont Courts, still has a lot of problems most don’t know about. Its a hope 6 block grant complex so it still has the issues that come with that.
Places like Barrington Dr and Boulevard homes speak for themselves. You only have to read the newspaper to know whats going on there. How many people have been shot or killed in Timber ridge alone the past few years? I’m in these neighborhoods a few times a week knocking on doors and sitting in their living rooms. Its a mess down there.
Quality, just quality
The Observer has this story too, here’s one of several articles they’re running:
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/10/05/1740554/charlotte-neighborhood-on-most.html
The article says that University City has the highest crime rate in Charlotte… which kinda conflates statistics since the survey only deals with violent crime. Seems a bit disingenuous.
Much of the area is in the North Tryon Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, and the latest crime statistics (through August) show criminal activity has dropped more than 10 percent in the past year. But that division has the second-highest crime rate in CMPD, trailing only University City.
My company is working on a few projects in this area. So far so good, but I wouldn’t want to be in some of these areas at night. We choose our field meeting times very wisely.
Yes Scotty, I work in the smack-dab middle of that neighborhood. We have watched many of the escapades that got us on that list from our offices. Including the guy about a year ago who killed himself during a SWAT standoff next door and multiple times I have watched the CMPD helicopter circle the property behind us. It’s not that bad though. I walk to that Bojangles for lunch quite often. No one bothers us too much. I have had to chase homeless drunkards off the property a time or two. It changes at night though. I haven’t worked past 8 too many times.

You assumed wrong.
Ah ok my bad. What on earth are you doing way down there on a regular basis? I used to work uptown and stopped at that Bojos many times on my way in for breakfast.
I don’t buy it. #11 in the COUNTRY?? No way.
Ugh…

If one place says that it is the second worst neighborhood in the city then how come University City isn't listed in the top 10?

By “a lot” I meant 1 or 2 times a month lol. I go there on the way to Bobcats/Checkers games.
