My Draft Order Sucks

We drew today for our draft order and I had some pretty bad luck. We have an 18 round draft and my first 6 picks are:

9, 12, 28, 33, 48, 53,

I don’t mind drawing 9th out of 10 in the first round (not in love with it though) but what kills me is that late 3rd round pick. Because of that, I will for sure be forced to draft two RB’s with the 9th and 12th pick and will end up with 6-10 ranked QB. Not too happy about that. My only other option is to take a QB with the 12th pick but we start two RB every Sunday and I simply cannot wait 28 picks to get my 2nd (of 4) RB’s.

And on top of that, the upper tier (Holmes, Alexander, Tomlinson, Portis, A. Green, R. Williams, McAllister, J. Lewis) of RB’s will already be gone when I pick 9th. Based on our league history and what I know about the guys playing, assures that Vick will likely be the only QB to go in the first 9 picks. If that holds true, then I’ll probably end up two of the following: Stephen Davis, Fred Taylor, Faulk, Barlow, Henry, James, Barber, Dillon, Garner, etc.) for my starting RB’s. Guess it might not be the end of the world if I end up with Davis/Taylor and someone like McNair if he’s sitting there at #28 (doubt it).

Errrrr…

as long as we are on the topic of fantasy football, i was wondering if anyone wanted to join my yahoo fantasy football league. it should be very competitive.

are you only serpentining 2 rounds, then reseeding for the next 2, etc. etc.?! What benefit does that have over a normal serpentine draft, which is without a doubt the fairest of any method. Its not that hard. No chance I’ld ever play in a league that wasn’t serpentine. That leaves the door wide open for rediculous situations, imo.

As for your situation… You drew basically a 9 slot, bumped to #8 in the 3/4 and 5/6 rounds. Not too out of the ordinary or far off of a normal serpentine. I don’t know youre scoring syste, or starting lineup considerations, etc… Here’s what I’ld do (when picks are grouped I did them to my preference, and generally based on who might be avail in a normal scoring system).

You say Vick is gonna go in the top 9?! wow! Does you’re league weight QB’s? Or is someone just have homoerotic tendancies to BoyWonder (ie Vick).

I’ld definately take the best RB avail at 9 (James, Williams, Taylor). - I wouldn’t touch Lewis until you knew the pending decision of his court case, or you really wanted to roll the dice**

At 12, I’ld take any of the 2 leftovers from the first round above, followed by Moss-WR, Barlow-RB, Harrison-WR. (and if you got James above, scratch Harrison here).

At 28/33 there are a variety of players I’ld target… Culpepper/Manning for QB’s (although I doubt either are avail, but should be the only 2QBs you consider at 28), and R.Johnson-RB,Ward-WR,Owens-WR,Bennet-RB, Gonzalez-TE (if you’re required to start 1), CMartin-RB, DMason-WR, McNabb-QB, Hasselbeck-QB, Westbrook-RB, Garner-RB.

Reguardless, I’ld make damn sure I had at least 2RB’s by the end of the 4th.

After that draft by need, value, and byeweek as to who is available.

But things could be much worse than the following (which based from above are all possibilities):
Williams, Harrison, R.Johnson, DMason - RB/WR/RB/WR
Taylor, Moss, Owens, CMartin - RB/WR/WR/RB
James, Barlow, Gonzalez, Hasselbeck - RB/RB/TE/QB
or being completely optimistic…
James, Taylor, Ward, Gonzalez - RB/RB/WR/TE

**Drafts are never won in the first 3-4 rounds, but they can be easily lost there.

My 2 cents.

We have a 10 owner league and have been doing the 2-round serpentine for several years with no conflicts/complaints at all. We all agreed awhile back that it’s just more fun to redraw every odd round and take our chances with how it plays out. I think it’s fair because your picks are spread out unless you get the 10/1 back-to-back picks but if you do, you’re then forced to wait awhile before you pick again so it all balances out.

You say Vick is gonna go in the top 9?! wow! Does you're league weight QB's? Or is someone just have homoerotic tendancies to BoyWonder (ie Vick).

We have a Vick homer in the league who will for sure take him. Manning will go first round as well. Our scoring system does put a bit of an emphasis on QB’s but most people still pile up the RB’s early. Manning/Vick will be the only two QB’s that will sniff the first round and only a couple more (Culpepper, McNair…maybe Favre/McNabb) will go in the 2nd round. You get bonus points for big plays so big arms are coveted.

I feel pretty confident that Williams and/or Lewis will be there at 9. Legal problems aside, I’d rather have Lewis and may roll the dice if he’s there. Can’t imagine that situation not getting worked out. James will be there for sure but he hurt me last year, until late in the season when it was too late. Too many options on that team in the red zone and I’m still not sure the E. James of the past will show back up. I’d rather get him as a 2nd RB because I’m confident he’ll be there at 12. I’m actually starting to lean towards Moss with the 9th pick and then someone like S. Davis, R. Johnson or D. Davis with my 12 pick. We score RB’s/WR’s the same and we award bonus points for big plays (as I stated above). Based on that, Moss is clearly more apt to grab a 60 yard TD pass for those bonus points. If I don’t take him, the guy picking 10/11 very well may.

Actually, with maybe Gonzalez being the exception, I feel pretty certain I could get that last line of players. But I could probably replace him with a very servicable QB there. No one in our league is going to take two QB’s anywhere close together before filling at least two RB and two WR positions. So after the initial rush of QB’s are gone, I could probably get someone like Brooks, Bledsoe, Delhomme, Pennington, etc. in the 4th round. Wouldn’t be a bad quartet of players but I’m thinking more along the lines of Moss, R. Johnson/S. Davis, Julius Jones (high hopes for the rook), Brooks

Just depends how the first couple rounds go. Last year, 12 of the first 16 picks were RB. Harrison, Moss, Vick and Manning were the other 4. I don’t see much changing this year.

Last year, I picked 10th every round (non-serpentine) in a 10-team league and was still able to finish 2nd in the league. The draft won’t determine your finish as much as your Waiver-Wire & Trades transactions will.

I picked up Dominick Davis & Rudi Johnson off of waivers last year which made a ton of difference. Also, with your later round picks you can take a stab at the 2 Rookie RB’s projected to start this year (J. Jones - Dallas & K. Jones - Detroit).

At least you’re not in a 12 team league which would REALLY deplete the talent pool in a hurry!!!
