Name Confusion Log

I’m so tired of hearing ā€œthe UNCC 49ersā€ on wfnz…

I hope you’re mistaken on some point here. His son went to UNC Charlotte…

Wouldn’t be surprised if you were right tho. :(
Our chancellor did the same thing …
Sometimes, sometimes, it’s just an honest slip of the tongue by those who know better. Sometimes, it’s a Freudian slip. Sometimes it’s plain ignorance. Sometimes it’s just to piss us off.

And our chancellor did it at one of our proudest moments. He earns his name ā€œchapel hill philā€
The University of Charlotte needs a chancellor who is on our side!!
not a pawn for the unc system

Then stop tuning to wfnz likr 99.9% of niner fans have done.
I’m so tired of hearing ā€œthe UNCC 49ersā€ on wfnz…
Glad to see people in our city can get our name right. Yea, there is no problem here at all.

Midtown Sundries - University on Harris is closed today for renovations. They’re going to re-open tomorrow under the name FANZ Sports Grill, www.fanzsportsgrill.com ; same mgmt and staff. They gave me a card when I tried to go there for lunch today, at the bottom it says:

Located just off W.T. Harris Blvd, halfway between I-77 and I-85, near the University of North Carolina, Charlotte

Honestly, after a decade of using Charlotte for athletics, and the school being named UNC Charlotte, it seems to be that we should have never done it.

While I don’t love the UNCC moniker, if branded appropriately it could have been successful. It is debatable that things are worse off now than they were before in terms of name confusion.

One of the most important strategies in branding is to have 1 recognizable name / brand. If we are not going to become the University of Charlotte, we should have never moved away from the UNCC name.

Having 15 names like we have now, just adds to the boondoggle.

Without sticking this in another thread, I wanted to reply by saying… I totally get your point, but personally I’m glad we changed our athletics to Charlotte. We just haven’t been real successful lately, and I’m mainly talking about basketball. Imagine if we were to go back to a Final Four today. More folks would know us as ā€œCharlotteā€. Imagine if we were in a better conference and had successful football. The potential is there and I don’t regret changing our sports team. I think the ONLY person really killing our brand today though is our chancellor. He could have easily made the call to change our name, but he lacks the guts to pull such a move. I’m sure he was getting pressure from the likes of others like Woodward (I’m totally speculating, but Phil has to be getting pressure from somewhere). We had the most momentum for a name change and since he didn’t capitalize on it, I fear that it may never happen. Either way, I’m glad we moved away (or trying to move away) from ā€œUNCCā€.

I absolutely understand where this is coming from. Very similarly to you, I contend that the most realistic way to go is the Virginia Tech / VPI route:

Trademark and market the school as ā€œUniversity of [at] Charlotteā€ both athletically and academically but never bother to actually change the real name. It’s quick and easy and can be done in segments.

G** F****** D*** IT I CANT F***** TAKE IT ANY MORE!!! AGGGGGG!!! My friend that I work with offered me a UNC sticker because she can’t use it, and figured hey since I went to fucking YOO IN SEE, then I’d want it. (because UNC and UNC Charlotte are the EXACT fucking same thing right!?) UGH CHAPEL HILL PHIL YOU MOTHERSHIP FUCKING SUCK UP WAKE THE FUCK UP!!! WE ARENT UNC!!! Until we get OUR OWN identity we will always be looked at as the satellite campus of Chapel Hill. UGGGJHHH!! I want to punch a brick wall covered in acid drenched razor wire right now I’m so mad. Chapel Hill Phil HAS GOT TO GO!!!

I swear on everything that is holy to me, I will not donate ONE FUCKING PENNY to this backwards school (outside of my FSL payments bc I can’t not support a GOOD FORWARD THINKING cause) until we change our ridiculous name.

#CHPcanEAD!

I would rather deal with all this confusion stuff than the be known by uncc ALL THE TIME.

I’d rather stick razor wire up my junk than have CHP be the chancellor for ONE MORE SECOND.

Scotty must have a fetish for razor wire because I don’t think CHP is going anywhere any time soon.

Unfortunately, you’re right (about him not going anywhere, not about the razor wire! lol). Serious question though, what would it take to oust him, if more people were on board with kicking him out? I don’t know how all this works. Could the BOT give him the boot? Or does the state have to approve it? Obviously with the addition of football, it’d be harder than ever to remove him, but just a hypothetical, if people were on board with giving him the boot, how would that be done?

If you thought the name confusion in Charlotte was bad, out here it’s ten times worse. NO ONE knows who/what UNC Charlotte is east of I95.

It also points out that 2 names can work, even if it isn’t ideal. Many Tech schools are like this, in that they market a different name for athletics.

The problem with us is that there are professional Charlotte teams. So if somebody just says ā€œCharlotteā€, there may be confusion with the Charlotte Bobcats. Also, there’s a well known professional team named the 49ers. Just 2 more things that add to a name confusion for us. I’ve been a proponent of switching to the Miners, but am realistic knowing that is so far down the list.

Got this text from my aunt and uncle in Massachusetts this morning: ā€œCongratulations on graduating UNC, we are all so proud of you!ā€

The same problem applies to Memphis, Houston, Miami, etc. And they don’t seem to consider it a major issue.

Charlotte 49ers can be troubling. My step-mom asked me if my favorite team was the Charlotte Bobcats before. I’m like WHAT?

This ad for UNC MBA on facebook looks like they are using a picture of our campus!!!

It’s okay, Universal, CHP is changing our name to UNC South Campus Jr. Heels. :o
