Name Modifiers List

I’m sure most of you who care about the University’s name issue are familiar with my ā€œName Confusion Logā€ thread. This is kinda similar to that.

As we all know, it is a fact that UNCCH going by only UNC and us going by UNCC makes us appear to be a lesser school or branch campus to those who are not very familiar with us. Much like the ā€œName Confusion Log,ā€ I want to create as large a list as possible so as to substantiate this claim that our name makes us appear lesser.

My main argument on this particular point is that in the English language, it is a general rule that a modifier at the end of a name or phrase signifies that whatever has the modifier is less than whatever has the root name or phrase. Finding examples is actually harder than I expected so I was hoping you guys could help. Here is what I have so far (a few may be a stretch):

NFL – NFL Europe
Disneyland – Disneyland Paris
ESPN – ESPN2, ESPNNews, ESPN Classic, ESPN8
NCAA Division 1 (often used instead 1-A) – NCAA Division 1-AA
24K Gold – 24K Gold Plated
Coors – Coors Light

For things like ESPN where there are several similar cases (MTV – MTV2), I’m just leaving those off unless y’all think they should added. So you probably don’t need to post those. Thanks for the help!

Are you making some kind of negative insinuation about Coors Light? Not cool man. Not cool at all.

Haha. I saw that one coming. No. No negative insinuation. It is just a general belief that Light beer doesnt taste as good as regular.:toast:

Here is another.

My only problem is, I am kind of trying to ignore modifiers at the front of a name. That kind of goes in a different direction and I think it will confuse people about the argument being made.

Or were you trying to make a joke…?

I think if you have to ask you either ā€œmissed the busā€ or it wasn’t a joke. Either way, asking if it’s a joke kills any possibility of jokiness…

Nah, I mean if it was a joke I got it, but it wasn't that funny. I personally love jokes that arn't always directly in your face, and sometimes they are so well hidden that you have to ask.

Jeez, you try to make a simple contribution to a silly thread and this is what you get… :hammer:

I thought the whole point was to say that the ā€˜UNC’ in front of ā€˜UNC Charlotte’ caused the school to appear inferior by the general public. I used Vichy France as a comparison to UNC Charlotte. One contained a humiliating modifier to signify that it was a conquered institution run by traitors and puppets of a system headed by the most evil men that ever walked the earth. The other one was Vichy France.

Like ChevEE said, if you have to explain it, then it must not have been funny.

Yea thats what I thought you were trying to do. Having to be explained doesn’t necessarily mean its not funny, in my opinion anyways.

You misunderstood my argument though. I’m arguing that being UNC Charlotte makes us sound lesser because there is already a place called UNC that is the flaghship and most prestegious and all that. It is about the modifier at the end of root making us sound lesser.
