Name The Niners

Originally posted by HP49er@Mar 28 2005, 07:20 PM What was the result of the voting done at the Cincy game concerning this topic? I would think there were more votes cast then than there will be in a Yahoo group, unless someone wasn't happy with how the vote turned out.
Niner Nation won easy. That was meant as a precursor to narrow the list down to a 3 names so a poll could be placed online and announced through the newspaper and main page of uncc.edu. I don't know why they ended up settling with a Yahoo Sports group as the solution, they definitely won't get near the turnout they had at the Cinci game or if they had done a better set up poll.

As for someone not being happy withthe turnout, I don’t think that’s an issue here. The girl at the head of the SMA who is running this stuff doesn’t seem to have any particular favorite and I don’t believe she would redo this poll to get a different outcome. She is concerned about getting as many people involved with this vote as possible, I guess the Yahoo group was the best they could come up with right how.

By the way I was class of 80 as well

If you took any accounting classes, do you remember Professor Higgins…

I was born in 1980. I figure it would be a cool poster for that reason. No, I haven’t taken accounting.

the poll was reset…if you are bored you can revote. I have no idea how this is going to work, not very well set up for sure.

SAC Nuts was added to the poll for some reason. This is further proof why nothing seems to get properly done.

wow that was easy

I am opposed to the student body voting on a name. A name for a student group should be something that catches on (i.e. Cameron Crazies). Not something that is forced and established as official. These choices for names will be voted on by the student body in the spring elections according to the U-times. Niner Nation will most likely win. so then what? How will this become soemthing that students are referred to.

Also, ā€œNiner Nationā€ is a poor choice because Niner Nation already means all Niner fans so it is a poor choice for student section fans. (I do think Niner Nation is great on t-shirts and this website because in those venues I feel it is used properly). I think that a student government implemented name will be stupid. Niner Nation is not a good candidate for the name if there is one, because it already has a meaning that is not just the students who show up for games. It does mean all fans and no one can change that meaning with a vote. I do not think this will increase attendance. It will just make our fans look more and more like ACC and Duke wannabees, which isn’t soemthing that I wannabee.

Let’s actually do something cool and original…like giving Norm a whiskey bottle and a gun. Naming your student section soemthing stupid is not original- no matter what the name is.

THIS IS NOT JUST A STUDENT SECTION LIKE GANG GREEN

How many times does CMack have to make this clear. All they want is a name to refer the entire UNC Charlotte fan base as (particulary the students). Niner Nation is an awesome name because it is so popular right now. I think it’s ridiculous how long it’s taken to get a simple thing like a name done.

What’s in a name?

Apparently quite a lot if it takes 2 or 3 months to get one figured out. BTW can someone explain to me how Yahoo groups is the way to decide this. Shouldn’t the University post the poll on the front page or something. I tried suggesting using this sites poll function but they said ā€œit would create a biased environment.ā€ I guess no environment is better than a biased one eh?

This is a grassroots operation. Started from a spirit meeting in February(?) and for the most part has ONE person working on it. A Yahoo group is probably one of the worst answers to solving this, I don't know how it was determined to be the solution. Either the powers that be at the office that runs the UNCC.edu website wouldn't agree to advertise the poll or they simply weren't contacted.

The bottom line is that it needs to get done. If we realistically want to start promoting the name and having t-shirt’s available by August, it has to start soon. Once a name is decided upon(and I don’t know how/when the deciding vote will finally end up being) there are still many steps left to getting the name actually implemented. You can’t just pick a name and sit back and expect everyone to go out and buy shirts.

I plan on contacting the person running the poll tomorrow to see what the situation is, hopefully a better poll situation is being worked out so we can have a name by mid-April. And I think it’s all a formallity anyway, I don’t know who wouldn’t vote for Niner Nation(especially seeing those other choices), but the people running it think a poll must be conducted…

Naughty Niners? What are they going to be rollin’ while they’re in the stands, maybe they can spit some game at the opposing players. Slightly Biased, but Niner Nation is not only the best but the only respectable choice.

CMack,

The bottom line is that it should have been done Already. Grouping this with Student Elections IMO is not a great idea. Most people don’t care about student elections, much less a name. It would have been much more prefferable to run this survey at homecoming or a game after Cincy. Or just use the Cincy results. Since when does a name need primary elections. It’s a name for pete’s sake, it’s not like we’re nominating the republican presidential candidate.

IF you go with SAC Nuts, opposing teams will FOREVER call you the Nut Sacks.

I agree, but I’m not running this. It should have been done with the results of the Cinci vote, you aren’t going to get a better target audience for a vote than that. But it’s not done, so the first step is to get an acceptable vote that the people running this will see as satisfactory.

The whole reasoning behind the voting(which I don’t neccessarily agree with, but they are the reasons) is that it’s not fair for a small group of people(the 15-20 who showed up to the spirit meeting) to choose a name for everyone. I think all of the voting is just a waste of time to get to the Niner Nation name. But again, I’m not running this, I’m just trying to support the people who are are doing this because their intentions are good whether or not you agree with their methods.

It is a name for the student body. This is what the scope of the name is supposed to be according to tuesday’s U-times. It is specifically a name for the student body. you can’t name the student body Niner Nation, because Niner Nation already means everyone. Where does the authority to impelment this name come from. How will it catch on? I think the whole concept of voting on a name for our student body (student section at games) is absurd. Yes, I think people should wear Niner Nation shirts, but the student body should not vote on an officially sanctioned name for a student section. Maybe SGA should have a referendum on their ballots that we can officially nick-name Holshouser ā€œHo-houseā€, if we are in the business of officially sanctioning cute names for stuff.

I know I’m a little biased here, but I just have to weigh in on the topic…

WHY do we need a separate name for the student body? Only half the lower bowl is students. We need to unite not separate. There is already a name that unites us and that is Niner Nation. It was not chosen by some vote of people who half of only come to one game a year(Cincy). It was not chosen by some poll on yahoo. One day it was put on a T-Shirt and it took off from there.

I appreciate the grass roots movement and all, but I thought there was already a grass roots movement afoot. A group of students, selling shirts made with their own money and for the last year this site.

Why does there need to be a sudent named group? Why can’t we all be part of Niner Nation? To me this just seems to be wasted effort, take the name that is out there and everyone seems to like and run with it.

Because... WE ARE CHARLOTTE!

Mac, there are 3 ways to do things:

 1. the right way
 2. the wrong way :frowning:
 3. the UNCC way

With that being said, it should be Niner Nation. No it’s not original, but it works.

Is it just me…or does it seem like we over analyze absolutly everything?

This will NEVER happen. Its too easy & makes too much sense.

Personally, I think Lutz will learn to EFFECTIVELY coach defense before this name issue goes away.

I agree. There needs to be no vote, the whole load of Niner fans is already called Niner Nation. Let’s just make more shirts. Lets not cut it off and make it be only the student section. Let it remain as an unofficial term that it is. This post sums up the way I feel about it.
