NC Skiing and Harrah's Casino Trip Advice

Was gonna plan on going skiing next week ( I guess they’ll still be open… I have no idea )… and was going to try and make Harrah’s Casino a stop the next day and then head home.

Anyone have any info on what Ski places are nearer Harrahs? what ski places are good and not good? and what route to take?

A lady at work drove staright to Harrah’s from Charlotte and the I40 rock slide didnt effect her. So dont know if coming from a ski place to the casino would.

Cherokee is not exactly next to any ski resorts that I know of. Catalochee and Saphire Valley are kind of close I guess. Most of the good NC skiing is around Boone not Asheville or the Cherokee area.

too bad the rock slide didn’t bury Cherokee, nastiest town in NC

my advice is to stay as far away from there as possible, don’t waste your time or money

I know Cherokee is nasty but still pretty good time in the casino.

So if I wasn’t planning to go to Cherokee after skiing… what place has the best skiing for the driving distance/money ?

You better check the resorts. I think this may be the last weekend a lot of them are going to be open.

Unless you’re dead set on the Casino’s, I would go to Boone- I don’t ski, but I dont hear great things about the skiing around Asheville.

Cataloochee will be open until mid March, this is according to a Clerk of Court I know who is also volunteer ski patrol. It’s also the most convenient to Cherokee, and the best NC skiing outside of the Boone area resorts.

I’m not very high on Cherokee, but I do enjoy Cataloochee, they are close enough to each other to ski for a day and hit the casino for a couple hours.

I’d recommend it, and if I wasn’t going to Vegas this weekend, would probably have planned a similar trip.

If you aren’t gambling then I would recommend Winterplace in WV. It’s a three hour drive straight up I-77. I avoid the NC mountains, they really don’t have a lot of trails. I was at Winterplace two weeks ago and they have plenty of snow, probably the most they have had in years. I think it’s the best option for a day trip. Snowshoe is the best within driving distance but not for day trips; you’re looking at five hrs but they have a lot of trails and are also having record snowfalls.

I’m heading to Utah on Friday for skiing!!

bump…

thanks everyone thus far for the info

If going Cherokee, might as well go on over the mountain to Ober Gatlinburg. You’d at least have other things to do after skiing in the town.

NC skiing is pretty bad. Like… I really, really don’t recommend it. Waste of money imo. Of course it’s better than no skiing, but that’s about it. But, it’s been a little under a decade since I was at one of them so maybe they eased massive overcrowding by expanding, and fixed their chair lifts… and made their mountains bigger… and increased their snow fall…

Since Cherokee apparently isn’t near any ski places anyways, I’d suggest doing two trips.

If you’re going to go skiing, only place worth note near us is in West Virginia. Snowshoe ftw. Winterplace is kinda decent and closer and cheaper, but it reminds me of a glorified NC ski resort which really isn’t saying much.

Snowshoe is really awesome, and while it has gotten a little bit more crowded and expensive to stay at the resort (not necessarily if you don’t stay on the mountain), it is still gigantic leaps and bounds better than NC and Winterplace. But if you are still learning to ski, you might be better off not wasting a trip to Snowshoe on learning.

Bet it all on #3 on the Roulette table. ;D

What roulette table?

Snowshoe is way to crowded now on the weekends. If you go there, ski at Silver Creek (adjacent to and owned by Snowshoe) on Saturday.

Beech or Sugar are by far your best bets in NC. If you’re a beginner, go to Sugar or even Appalachian.

Another really good WV option is the Canaan Valley/Timberline area, but that’s another hour farther away than Snowshoe.

Does Harrah’s still not use real persons to run their games. At one time, everything was machine operated. I prefer a real person to deal the cards.
