When I posted this thread about the number of Division I hoops programs, I had no idea it would morph into a football thread. Hmmm…
I guess that’s because the ramifications for our embryotic football effort is much more concrete in folks minds then those for our very real and existing basketball program.
Many people have no problem aborting a fetus but shrink from executing a murderous criminal. That may be an extreme allegory, but it does convey the difference between the two sports situations currently and Niners Basketball has only killed our expectations up to this point.
Good news Brick! Looks like you won’t be developing an ulcer over the moratorium’s effect on us getting football afterall.
[B][I]We don’t feel that we would have an issue on this. Looks like adding football doesn’t change anything from a reclassification process (ie - there is no formal application process). Add football as a D-1AAA, and you automatically become D-1AA (scholarship or non-scholarship).
Just reading ESPN.com’s “Shootaround” on Independents and here are the schools that got in before the moratorium and will be making the move to D-1…
Bryant University (Smithfield, RI) - 3,000 students
Houston Baptist University - 2,300 students
Seattle University - 7,200 students
Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville - 13,000 students
University of New Haven - 3,400 students
University of North Dakota - 13,000 students
University of South Dakota - 8,600 students

The Salukies are the only current DI-AA, so I assume that means they’re also the only one going to DI-A.
