Does anyone even look at grades / eligibility anymore? Can not see some of the University President’s going for this chaos fir an extended period of time but maybe $$$ is all that matters to anyone or institution anymore.
clt laughed when Michigan wouldn’t accept hours “earned” at UNC CHeat
some schools still pay attention
Still mad about the Dez Walker situation?
Probably not since the NCAA reversed course and approved Walker’s waiver. There are additional instances of athletes at NC universities having requests denied, so that accounts for the continued interest. Plus just being a shrewd politician. BTW, I did check Stein’s bio and though he grew up in NC, he attended college out of state at Dartmouth and Harvard.
Josh Stein grew up in Chapel Hill, where his dad was a well known attorney.
Yes, he did. Actually spent part of his childhood in Charlotte as well but did graduate from Chapel Hill H.S.

If this is not completely out of control now , are we getting close!?!?
What risk is this to our roster(s) for next 14 days?
Will kids soon be able to portal in the middle of the season if someone gets hurt at a P5 program and they need a fill in from G5?
If it’s unrestricted could do it week to week.
Foreshadowing future permanent state?
Some are going to say that college is just mirroring the pro game but that’s not true. What we’re going to get is annual (monthly? Weekly?) free agency for every player. At least the pros have multi-year contracts.
And as if NIL wasn’t already buying a championship…
This just makes it even more mercenary.
This is bad for the fans, and will turn them off, which will be the downfall of college sports.
I guess the workaround would be to make Grants In Aid multi-year, but that creates a whole new set of problems and overly entitled players.
It’s a sad day for college athletics. This really feels like the end
Pretty simple make NIL deals contracts. Lock them in for awhile.
At some point kids will have to decide do they wanna be college students or pro athletes. Take the money and be stuck or keep all your freedom.
I foresee two operating models:
-
For profit / employee based - subject to all employment law rules. This will be where the “football majors” go. They don’t even have to attend classes - a degree will be an optional part of their employment contract compensation.
-
A more classic amateur model - probably with some type of low level stipends funded by media contracts, but otherwise more like what we were used to.
Option two will exist simply because there’s far too many schools who can’t afford to do option one because the media partners won’t pay all of them enough money to do so. They will get relegated by Fox and ESPN.
The only potential silver lining is whatever remaining college/ amateur model there is I hope reorganizes into regional leagues without any snobbery. Duke, Wake, and App need to be in the same league with Charlotte and ECU and everyone else nearby who doesn’t make the cut.
I also hope NIL collectives and any direct involvement of boosters in paying players gets annihilated. It’s a terrible model. Let the for profit kids participate in revenue sharing, but nothing directly from a booster or a collective.
