Netflix vs Blockbuster online?

Apparently Blockbuster is set to have over 2500 redbox like vending machine units up and operating nationwide by the end of the year.

Care to expand why?

Sure. I’ve used both and Netflix movies seem to arrive on average one day sooner due to a far superior distribution system.

I love the streaming feature on my 360. If you have a good internet connection the picture is about equal to standard DVD. They are beginning to offer HD options which aren’t nearly as good as Bluray but about as good as a USA HD or TNT HD channel.

I also don’t like taking the time to the BB store. That’s why I have the mail service to begin with. If I wanted to rent at a location I’d use Redbox because it’s way cheaper than both.

Thanks. I’m not going to be streaming so it’s not a factor for me. The Blockbuster I would go to is right beside the grocery store I go to at least 3 times a week, so going to the store isn’t an inconvenience for me. And while I like the convenience of Redbox, the selection from the ones close to me always seem like crap. Or at least it seems like hit or miss whether something will be available.
Thanks! I think I’ll try Blockbuster. I don’t need streaming, like the in store option, don’t care about international film quantity and apparently it’s a whopping $1 cheaper than the comparable Netflix option.
I don’t even know how the in store rentals work anymore, but when I worked there, they were subject to rental terms. I think now they don’t ship your next online movie until you return the in-store rental.

Redbox is not cheaper. Redbox is a jip. It is cheaper than renting in store, yes, but with way worse selection. Redbox sucks unless you only want to see new releases.

I don’t see how it isn’t cheaper when it is $1 a movie, but I agree the selection sucks. You get what you pay for.

Speaking of new releases, I have also had better luck getting new releases from Netflix vs. BB.

It depends on how you look at it. Netflix or Blockbuster online is a better value. For $1, you get one movie from redbox that must be returned the next day. I can go to blockbuster and rent a movie for a dollar and keep it for 5 days (BSI, otherwise known as non-new releases). I have a 1-out plan with netflix that give me unlimited rentals for $9 a month with no due dates and unlimited streaming. If I watch less than 9 movies, then I have gotten a better deal with redbox.

Every movie after 9 means I am getting a better deal with Netflix. That includes streaming. Even with the 4.99 plan, you get like 3 movies? Two in the mail and one streamed or something ridiculous like that. So, redbox is a little cheaper but only if you return the movie the next day.

So, if you’re a person that only watches 1 movie a month, redbox is cheaper. If you actually watch movies, then it is not a better value, it is far more expensive.

Thanks. Good to know. I imagine you are correct about the shipping. It’s not too big of deal for me because I’m leaning to just doing the 2 movies per month plan.

Except with BB you are paying for the convenience of picking the movie from home, having it delivered to your home and a much larger selection. The cheapest plan with BB is only $3.99. So once you pay for gas to and from Redbox, even if you only get 1 movie a month, it’s still comparable.

Oh yeah, I think Redbox is terrible as a destination. If you’re in the grocery store and you happen to see a movie you want to see, it’s a pretty good deal.

But you still have to drive out and return it.

I don’t disagree with any of that, but how many people really watch more than 10 movies a month? That wasn’t my point anyway; my point was Redbox in-store is cheaper than BB in-store if that’s your thing. I guess for old movies it’s the same. I don’t like either option personally.

I have the same plan you do with Netflix. I probably watch 5-7 movies a month but I’d still recommend it over Redbox and BB.

Redbox is a much cheaper way to watch new releases. And most people’s netflix queue is comprised mostly of new/recent releases. I know this because I end up going to redbox to get new movies, rather than waiting the 3 months before it’s finally available via netflix. I’m going to be doing that with I Love You Man this week.

Also re: streaming - on my PC, with the Silverlight application, my quality is better than standard non upconverted 480p DVD. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but it’s not bad. On my xbox, it’s noticably worse.

And I couldnt even stream movies until I got Silverlight. Netflix thought I was trying to capture the streams or something because my rig was too upgraded (thats what the netflix tech support guy told me). It really hated my 9800 GT (which is now a dated vid card).

Quality. The Hangover seemed to get a lot more pub, but I Love You Man was better IMO. Bad name for a movie though.

Saw it last night. Underwhelmed. The awkward Paul Rudd stuff was annoying, not funny.

I didnt hate the movie but I hated those parts. Rest was okay.

Well, I don’t use Netflix for new releases, so I can’t really speak to people who use it for that. I would imagine that Redbox is a better value if all you use it for is brand new movies and you only watch a few movies a month. I don’t even watch that many, I probably get 1 a week through the mail. I stream maybe 2 movies a week? Sometimes more, sometimes less. I use it mostly for obscure tv shows I can’t find anywhere else.

I also get every channel on TV. You would think I watch TV shows more than I do. I hardly ever watch it. I also buy movies like they are going out of style and they just sit on my bookshelf.

But, whenever I get some free time, I’m sure i’ll get around to watching everything, haha.

I have strongly considered killing my DirecTV service and just going with Netflix and the interwebs for my entertainment. I’m very surprised Hulu hasn’t come up with an iPhone or XBox app yet. Why have cable or satellite at that point?

I can dl movies and TV shows and watch them on my XBox using the media extender but the quality isn’t quite where I’d like it to be.

The Iphone can’t view flash video. You can watch it on a windows mobile phone though.

That’s why you need an app. Youtube, pandora, etc all use flash online but made iphone specific apps.

My understanding is that it cannot view Windows Media Player apps.
