Who steps in at UAB?
Coaching scoop? I’ve got coaching scoop. Here’s what we (me and you) are hearing:
UAB: With Mike Anderson going to Missouri, per ESPN.com, three obvious candidates for the UAB job would be South Alabama’s John Pelphrey, former Indiana coach Mike Davis and Tennessee assistant Scott Edgar. Pelphrey goes without saying; he’s one of the hottest mid-major coaches in the country after leading the 2005-06 Jaguars to 24 wins and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Davis is an Alabama native who went 55-41 in the Big Ten while at Indiana and does his best recruiting in his home state. Edgar comes from the same Nolan Richardson coaching tree that produced Anderson, and was a UAB assistant under Anderson from 2002-05. A less obvious candidate – to the casual fan – would be Charlotte’s Bobby Lutz. UAB is familiar with Lutz from when Charlotte was in Conference USA, and Lutz is a strong Deep South recruiter who has led the 49ers to five NCAA Tournament trips in eight years.
Lutz might just be the hottest coach in the nation before the 2008-2009 season… but for the 2006-2007 preseason I think he might be a little bit below Skip Prosser in desirability
Yeah, and I'm sure Bobby has some green ties around too. Going to UAB would not be much of a change for Bobby. Whatever happens...happens.
It wouldn’t be a change at all. A total lateral move since UAB and Charlotte are very similar in regards to basketball. It’d be a step down in conference in my opinion though. Not much of one mind you, but a small one.

The only change would be he would double his salary… Anderson was making twice as much as Lutz.
Though the conference change would be small when looking at this year’s numbers, I don’t think anyone would take the potential of the A-10 at full strength over the … mess C-USA has become. X, Temple, GW, Charlotte, St. Joe’s, Dayton … all NCAA Tournament teams very recently. C-USA has … Memphis, and UAB. Plus, Memphis was not always this strong, and will they remain this strong? Who knows.
I think they have some serious facilities issues also, old school city arena etc… not sure what the attendance figures are.
It is interesting that Anderson did not hold out for a job in the SEC, not sure why he would leave just yet, he would of had a SEC offer if he has not had one already. He is a good coach.
