I think the “shock” is the 286 straight days at sea.
No port and 12 to 14 hour days for 7 days a week for 286 days is a problem especially for a war that is already won and an enemy that is decimated with no Navy…
The incompetence of the logistics and planning is also pretty " shocking".

My older brother was one of those school kids who donated dimes to save the ship. My family was rewarded by getting to tour the ship before the general public.
We visited Wilmington during Easter weekend in 1962. There was an ice storm and ice was falling off the upper decks and ropes onto the crowds on the main deck. Luckily, I was wearing my toy army helmet.
The white building in the background of the pictures is the Federal Courthouse. It was often used as a state courthouse in Matlock.
