It was incredibly hot in NC in 1954. In addition to the heat, there was a terrible drought. Cities in the Piedmont were fining residents who were watering their yards or washing their cars.
Hurricane Hazel made landfall near Oak Island around October 16th. The beaches south of Wilmington were devastated. Tremendous rain fell to the north and northwest of Wilmington.
The drought was relieved and the heatwave was broken. There was flooding as far north as Toronto.

Insurance burn?
Since it hasn’t reopened I bet they didn’t have flood insurance and it was a total loss during Helene. It’s right next to the River. I bet some crack head was living in there and burned it down.
I’d be amazed if it had insurance to begin with as ratty as it was. I wouldn’t insure it.
As a young child lived for awhile in a campus quonset hut while my mother was at the University of Colorado in the mid-1960s. CU ended up demolishing the post-WWII housing known as “Vetsville” in 1973.
I live in Denver, NC where lots of people drive these monster luxury trucks and I often wonder why do you need a truck that big and secondly how much does it cost to fill that tank every week?

I own two box trucks for my business though, so that hurts. Fortunately they’re gas and not diesel but 7-10mpg hurts no matter how you slice it. My sales vehicle is also an EV at least.
