I know he isnāt a Niner anymore but he was a good one. Happy to see his trajectory.
Stone Handy will likely play on Sundays
Smitty? Whereād that come from? Never heard him called that before.
clt says the Cincy Inquirer, the paper of record for Charlotte athletics.
clt loves the small school phrase as well
Charlotte 31k
Carolina 38k
ga tech 47k (most are grad students)
Loved the quote āthe player he is today is courtesy of the Charlotte 49ers.ā Wish he could have stuck around for a final season here. That is not the way of college sports now.
Thatās who any one not in Power 4 is now, a place to develop players so they can excel elsewhere. Oh and get paid.
I expected some of the ex-Charlotte players to get some NFL attention, but so far, all I see is a couple of mini-camp invitations, and those are usually dead ends. Only about one in ten leaves the mini-camp with a UDFA contract, and even then, they are a very long shot to make a team. At Ohio, Iām used to 1-2 players a year getting a UDFA contract, and a few getting mini-camp invites, with someone drafted ever 3-4 years or so. Only a few have ever been major contributors in the NFL, though. Hopefully Charlotte will get to where they regularly send people to the NFL.
Weāve sent a decent amount to the league in our short history. I think our poor coaching under biff really hindered the development of a bunch of these guys
Knight just got drafted 2nd round and actually said his year at Charlotte was the key to that happening. Not to mention, we had 3 guys drafted within the first 3 rounds over a 3-4 year periodā¦Carl, you post a ton of great things, but this isnt one of them.
I believe Carl was referring to the just completed 2025 draft.
I didnāt mean to post anything offensive, sorry. In fact, I was specifically trying to write it in a way that didnāt offend anyone, and I failed, so I apologize. I tried rewriting it, and ended up with a lengthy mess. I have decided to delete it, and simplify it down to my main point:
Charlotte (and all G5 schools) are faced with an environment where true stars will often leave for NIL money and improved draft chances, and there is not much that can be done to prevent it. On the other hand, many players who leave Charlotte to move up to P4 will end up as backups. A player who is starting at Charlotte has a chance to play well and to get noticed. A player who is a backup at P4 has virtually no chance of ever seeing the NFL. Therefore, letās root for the players who do end up at Charlotte. Whether they be P4 backups that transfer down, Division 2 stars that transfer up, or guys who spent their whole career at Charlotte, if they start, and star, they have a chance.

NPā¦good follow up post.
