Now Listening to...

I Love My Ducks (Return of the Quack) - Supwitchugirl

Monsters of Folk - One of my favorite albums from last year.

Monsters of Folk - “Dear God”

Monsters of Folk - The Right Place Music Video

Monsters of Folk - “Temazcal”
Woah, those guys are awesome. I love finding new music.
You realize that’s a supergroup, right? That’s Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), and Matt Ward (M.Ward)…

M. Ward is my favorite of the three. I liked that album okay, but I wish they’d let loose just a little bit. Matt’s a helluva guitar player, but he rarely cranks riffs like he’s capable of. When he does, it’s great.

If you like them, I would recommend:

MMJ - Okonokos (Double Live Album)

Bright Eyes - I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning

and M. Ward -Post War

and kinda similar:

Fleet Foxes

(CheckoutWhite Winter Hymnal)

Old, kinda outdated song, but still really great… and I love the way Win introduces it live (“Joe Simpson had a dream…”)

ANTICHRIST TELEVISION BLUES - ARCADE FIRE - GLASTONBURY 2007

I can’t find a live performance with audio that does it justice, but screw it, this is a tremendous song.

This is a fantastic album.

Yes NA, I know they were a supergroup. I hope they do another album, but last I heard they weren’t planning on it. I like MMJ and Oberst. Don’t know much about Ward, but I will check into some of that stuff. Wasn’t a huge fan of the Fleet Foxes album… Only listened once I think though. Might give it another shot.

…and I’m not listening to it. It is incessantly playing in my mind. I believe it might actually drive me insane.

I did that for Gil. 8)

M. Ward is supremely talented guitarist:

M. Ward: “Medley: Rag/Duet for Guitars #3”

…but his aesthetic choice is very old school folk - very quiet and deliberate. Honestly, you have to be in the mood for it. Otherwise, it’ll just put you to sleep. That’s why I wish he would cut loose some more. He plays great big classic hollow body guitars (though I think his favorite is a Gibson Johnny A which is a cool “hybrid” - same sound, smaller profile). I love that type of sound, and it’s no coincidence that many of the singer songwriters I like play them.

Austin City Limits rocks. There is another show like it on, generally around the same time. It also boasts awesome tunage.

YES NA! FINALLY you mention a band that I can say I’m fond of!

One of my favorite albums of all time.

Connor Oberst, ugh.

Going to see them when they come to town!

Oh that should be fun, though they’re getting a bit long in the tooth?

I love me some old school Cult. She Sells Sanctuary, Fire Woman, etc.

Great live.

Love Removal Machine is a killer song

Whoop Whooooooooppppp!

Hellz yea Ninja. I need to peep some of this freshness!

Was listening to Tighten Up, and then just went on a BK kick…

It’s missing NA faves like The Cabbage and Norman 3 but TF + about 3 beers and some great weather = awesome.

And I still think that Sparky’s Dream needs to be in the discussion of the best pop song of the 90s.

Alejandro Escovedo on Austin City Limits tonight…

The guy never fails to put a smile on my face. Very straight forward, but also so damn likeable.

Highlight was probably opening with Always a Friend, and this performance of Anchor from his new album wasn’t too bad either:

About the only downer was that he didn’t play Sister Lost Soul and I can’t find a link to the time he played it on Leno a couple of years ago and just killed. That was such an effortless performance. Just sounded great the whole way around.
