Observer: Fowler's take on big week for Niners

Observer: Strong week should get 49ers noticed

Good gameday piece…about another one of our breakthough opportunities. Fowler knows us well…kind of. Says we’re the Others Receiving Votes Niners (ORV). Need 2 wins!!!

Good article from someone we usually don’t get coverage from. And he’s pretty accurate about Iti being able to “get in the way.” Isn’t that about all he can do?

Lefty, always great to get as much ink as we can in the Big O, but I wondered why Fowler took that jab at George Washington? Doesn’t he know that GW has spent much of the season in the Top 25 and just missed this week as the top vote-getter after #25 Marquette?

Just wondering if this the sort of thing we’re going to see more of from the Observer as we join the A-10 on July 1. Afterall, “hoops expert” David Scott, with the blessings of Mike Persinger, has declared the A-10 mid-major.

Here’s the Others Receiving Votes this week:

George Washington 54, UCLA 49, Texas A&M 37, Miami 30, Charlotte 29, Florida 27, Maryland 27, Utah 24, Southern Illinois 22, Notre Dame 18, Pacific 15, UTEP 12, Oregon 10, NC State 6, Vermont 6, Western Michigan 6, Old Dominion 5, Massachusetts 4, Nevada 2, Bucknell 1, California 1

It's a conspiracy, I tell you. A blatant conspiracy.

“That’s where the 49ers usually stand in the major men’s basketball polls. They don’t quite crack the Top 25, but they do get enough of a whiff to receive a few votes along with the George Washingtons and Texas A&Ms of the world.”

How about the Notre Dames, UCLA’s, UVAs and NC States?

“Lutz is a very good coach. The 49ers have a solid program. And it’s wrong to suggest Charlotte never wins big games – the 49ers have beaten Cincinnati six times under Lutz and constantly contend for the league title.”

This would have been a good time to mention the 3 wins over top 10 teams from last year.

Lefty, perhaps I just read it wrong. To me, Fowler made it sound like the Niners, along with GW, were teams that just whiff the Top 25, never quite making it but getting just enough attention of a few to make the ORV category. Gives the impression that he is unaware that GW has actually been in the Top 25 for a number of weeks.

As for you Mike, no, I don’t consider it a conspiracy. Just arbitrary, that’s all. All in all, I appreciate all the pub you are giving the Niners this season. You’ve got a good one in Jena.

GO NINERS! BEAT THE BEARCATS!

Run, that’s the way I read it too. I was wondering why he chose “lesser” name teams when those powerhouses I mentioned are in the same category as us. Tex A&M hasn’t been in the ORV category for years.

Anyways, the coverage has been the best in the 16 years I’ve been in Charlotte.

Lefty, I've been in Charlotte for almost 40 years, so no disagreement there. The Niners coverage in the Big O has been exceptional this year. Kudos to Jena and Mike!

I have only been at my current “real” job for a few months now, so they are getting bombarded with 49er news around here. I make sure I send out emails and links to videos of 49er wins. I’m even getting them to the Cincinnati game.

One of my co-workers said just last week, “I’m actually starting to notice the 49ers on the news. They’re everywhere lately. On the news and in the paper.” That was great to hear, and he is right. It does seem to be getting better (at least for the year).
