Observer homecoming day story

'77 team set bar high for Niners, but Lutz sees similarities

1976-1977 was a better TEAM, not more talented. No need to discuss Maxwell, if the game was on the line, he would produce with a rebound or score. The fouls shots were automatic. Kevin King as a 6-7 bulky defender was better defensively than any big guy currently on the squad and could score when needed. Lew Massey was deadly from the corners at 20 feet, don’t know how good of a 3-pt threat he would’ve been. Melvin Watkins was a floor leader who was adequate as a scorer but could rebound due to his size. Chad Kinch was the same but had great range. The two of them would muscle today’s smaller guards badly, even though they’re far quicker. I must add Jeff Gruber to the mix, as an outside shooter, could have player for either team.

What does this group do well as a TEAM? Nothing… other than the bottom line, they win!

There is a MAJOR characteristic that the 2 teams have in common. Both teams constantly improved as the season progressed. With each game, both teams create/created the feeling that this/that season could be something special.

We did it then. We can do it now.

GO NINERS!!!
