N.U.T.S. = Niners United Towards Success
N.U.T.S. = Niners United Towards Success
Easy 'nuff.

The group following this first group should name itself ā€˜Twice Inspired Towards Success’

Considering the "full version" of the "Death of Gang Green" story involves love triangles (or even love squares, if that exists), the group president lying to the school, lies told to the group's board, changing of group rules/laws against the wishes of 7 of 8 board members, an impeachment of sorts, death threats to the Gang Green board and actual CMPD involvement, I'll save that one for a later time.

Here’s the light version. About 2004, the school was already looking for a way to transition from Gang Green into an option that would be inclusive to every member of the student body. After the 04-05 season, GG president met with school officials with a document signed by all the group’s officials stating GG had agreed to disband. Only problem was that out of the 8 signatures, 7 of those were forged. The rest of the board (I was a part of that) had no knowledge at all of this. By the time things could get sorted out, the school had already began moving on Niner Nation, and everyone agreed that was the way to go.

So aside from any legal issues, bad leadership did GG in.

As I said, I was there for the end of Gang Green. From 04 to 05, Section 110, seat A1 was my home (pretty good view of the court). As one of the biggest supporters of GG during my time there (even getting recognized by name on men’s basketball senior night). I’m extremely happy to see what the school has now. In my opinion, it’s much better and it’s great to see in encompass the whole student body. Gang Green was an exclusive little club. Niner Nation is everyone.

I had heard this story and with the lack of interest in the AD run NNG, we (gotta also give cred to Jfelt, Biscuit, GotLutz who are included in the ā€˜WE’) made darn sure that it wouldnt happen again and revamped NNG into a GG type program. Im pretty sure (correct me if I am wrong Ben) that the constitution and bylaws are the same as when we started NNG, but I specifically remember putting in rules to prevent the GG meltdown. We even had a 3 year plan to get the group going in the right direction (I think this is the last year the program has a president selected, next year it should be a voted president, and there maybe some other things changing). There may have been some trouble with NNG but never anything like I heard about with GG.

I am glad that NNG has been a success so far. Its awesome to see something we started as a small attempt to unite Niner Nation has come so far. First couple of years we doubled the growth every year, and from what Ben tells me it looks like they are on track to double from last year! Student initiative here is all this is. None of these guys get paid or get a special credit. Its all about bleeding green. I hope 10 years from now there are Niners running NNG that have the same fire and heart that NNG has today.

:weep:I hate that I am not around anymore.

Just think about how old we’ll be when our football team kicks off.

Those little NNG Whippersnappers won’t appreciate what they have.

Back in the day, when the old fight song was around, I remember some kid leaving the pep bad to take off for the tunnel where the players would run out onto the floor.

Once he saw them in the tunnel, he would take his trumpet and play this fanfare real loud (all by himself). Once he finished, the guy on the drums would do his thing for a about 5 or 6 seconds, and then the whole pep band would break into the fight song.

Ah, the good ole days ! Really Cool !

I specifically remember putting in rules to prevent the GG meltdown. We even had a 3 year plan to get the group going in the right direction

And that has helped tremendously. Gang Green started with a group of friends and didn’t rise to much more than that. Since there wasn’t an ā€œofficialā€ spirit group in place, GG was it. We’d take attendance at events and keep points by hand in a notebook. And honestly, there weren’t many true, screaming, face painting, hair wearing types - maybe 4 to 6 of us. People just joined GG for the good seats. $20 a year and they’d have close seats for Cincy, Louisville, Memphis – your ESPN games. When you had people like that in leadership (our last president and vice)… that spells trouble. The most passionate of us were relegated to ā€œspirit leadersā€ in the group. Nothing more than a title really. You need passion at the top. Again, this is where NNG is much, much more improved.

Yes - it would be very difficult to cause a ā€œGG meltdownā€ under the things Gill etc. set up with NNG.

Figure nows as good a time for an update as ever: Just got word that we’re currently up to over 180 members, which is unheard of for this point in the season… (we typically pick up right before basketball season) Last time I checked the excel spreadsheet we were at only 99, but a majority of those were Freshman! I’m really excited about that - the new kids seem to be fired up about Charlotte so I’m really looking forward to seeing what our turnout is for our first game this season! I think it will be reminiscent of 2 years ago (jficketts class) when we packed out the student section for an exhibition.

Now… being that 90% of the ppl I saw signed up had ā€œFreshmanā€ by there name (and 90% actually might be low…) I have to ask… WHERE ARE ALL OUR NNG MEMBERS FROM LAST YEAR? Get on the ball boys, NNG is being taken over by the frosh crowd!

I just remember being in 110 (I think, the corner) and was standing up cheering when someone in GG behind me told me to sit down. I told them to stand up…because that’s what we were there for.

That was my last game in GG. It was great for a while, but it went down hill fast. I like NNG much better - I like that it’s bigger than just an exclusive group now.

Thanks for the info about Gang Green…Niner Nation is more inclusive, and albeit, more original of a name…but Gang Green sounded catchy.

I hope the bonfire can return at some point. I think it would be a great way to ā€œteachā€ a lesson, or at least make a statement about people wearing other school’s memorabilia.

Another tradition: When I first visited Charlotte, I had tickets to a Cincinnati game…quite an experience! I miss seeing students camping out outside the arena. Maybe for Xavier that tradition can be revived…or at least when we switch (hopefully) conferences to better suit football and basketball.

Are you a current student, or an alum?

If you are a current student, we are trying to re-establish campouts as a tradition here. We’re going to start camping at the arena entrance before Friday and Saturday games this year… if you’re still a student, you should join us.

Those initials are already used in chapel hill. "Tarholes Inspired To Suck".

And those NNG seats in 110 do offer a great view of the court. I’ve even sat there a few times myself.

I remember Gang Green started at the end of my tenure, but it wasn’t an official club yet. I’d like to know of the Love Square & CMPD involvement.

The bonfire was suspended IIRC because of the drought. Then they perhaps stopped it since there wasnt many people who showed up.

The big problem with it was decided whether to go there or the game to get good seats. Its gotta be closer or earlier in the day or after the game or something

I remember this! And the Texas fight song. Dang, now I even feel old!

SF probably doesn’t remember me but I was in GG the same time as him. I joined it so I didn’t have to sit up at the VB games by myself (moved from IA/SD on a whim). My friends would actually go to basketball games so my points didn’t actually mean anything. At the time there were no groups of true fanatics sitting there and cheering. I thought it was good for the non-basketball sports.

As for it being exclusive - all you had to pay just like you do for NNG.

I remember Gang Green started at the end of my tenure, but it wasn't an official club yet.
The term "Gang Green" actually began in the 70s, but the term was used to represent everything involving 49er basketball rather than a specific group of individuals.
.......And the Texas fight song. Dang, now I even feel old!
shhhhhh............ You need to keep that a secret Sparty. You don't look old. Besides, age is all in your mind. People still ask me when I'm gonna grow up. :shades:

Arghhhhh I remember hearing that at games and thinking Hook’em Horns.

Gang Green died after the 04-05 season. It was a student org that is kind of like todays Niner Nation Gold. Somebody can comment more on the end of that group, but it may have had to do with the President and the organization not getting along, and then something about copyrights.

We haven’t burned stuff at the bonfire in a few years. It’s really sad and they need to bring it back.

Events like this take big wins…This year there may be one game that would allow an event like this to occur… Winning the conference tourney would be another, sweet 16 as well… We are due!!

SF probably doesn't remember me but I was in GG the same time as him.

Actually, I’m pretty sure I do remember you. Did you go with us to the ECU game?

Negative. Never went to away game (unfortunately). I was the guy that wore the blue SD hat.
