Old traditions and names

SO I don’t post here much, but I do enjoy reading this site on a daily basis. But something caught my eye recently inside the Student Union, and in After Hours.

In Norms there are two posters that are collections of images showing Charlotte in times past and present. One image that seems recent, as in a few years, was at a basketball game. The students wore shirts that said “Gang Green.” I thought it was pretty clever, and mentioned to friends that I wished we had kept the name. Was it a precursor to Niner Nation? What happened to it?

Also in AfterHours, there was a poster showing a bonfire that burned opponents, namely the evil empire of Chapel Hill, memorabilia. What happened to this event?

I don’t know much about sports history here, so if there are more traditions, groups, etc that were present (like the “Mine Shaft” – aka Belk gym) at one time, and now aren’t that would be awesome to know.

Since football is on its way, maybe a resurrection of some traditions would be a great way to maintain a history of our sports achievements. Just my two cents.

Gang Green died after the 04-05 season. It was a student org that is kind of like todays Niner Nation Gold. Somebody can comment more on the end of that group, but it may have had to do with the President and the organization not getting along, and then something about copyrights.

We haven’t burned stuff at the bonfire in a few years. It’s really sad and they need to bring it back.

pretty sure we lost that one due to drought conditions… I’m hoping it gets fired back up soon (no pun intended) now that the drought is over.

Gang Green dying is the reason NNG came about.

And I believe the Gang Green name is where the copyright issue came about. They’d have to pay money to put it on a shirt, or something.

PAGING S4NYNAH…

The gang green name has been around for a while but had died off in the late 90’s when a few friends decided to make it an official student group. So we organized the group, did a membership drive and ordered shirts etc. We worked with Athletics to get a dedicated section and it worked well for a few years. We even tried to do a point system like Niner Nation Gold does now (points for other sports etc) which was hard to monitor at that time. Eventually that died off as we moved on and the student leadership weakened.

And yes there was a copyright issue that came up around the same time that cause problems. I graduated in 02 and was an advisor to the group in 03 but beyond that I don’t have all of the details.

Oh and I love how NNG is handled now. I like the points system and allowing general admission with timed entries - it seams to work well.

PAGING S4NYNAH......

Considering the “full version” of the “Death of Gang Green” story involves love triangles (or even love squares, if that exists), the group president lying to the school, lies told to the group’s board, changing of group rules/laws against the wishes of 7 of 8 board members, an impeachment of sorts, death threats to the Gang Green board and actual CMPD involvement, I’ll save that one for a later time.

Here’s the light version. About 2004, the school was already looking for a way to transition from Gang Green into an option that would be inclusive to every member of the student body. After the 04-05 season, GG president met with school officials with a document signed by all the group’s officials stating GG had agreed to disband. Only problem was that out of the 8 signatures, 7 of those were forged. The rest of the board (I was a part of that) had no knowledge at all of this. By the time things could get sorted out, the school had already began moving on Niner Nation, and everyone agreed that was the way to go.

So aside from any legal issues, bad leadership did GG in.

As I said, I was there for the end of Gang Green. From 04 to 05, Section 110, seat A1 was my home (pretty good view of the court). As one of the biggest supporters of GG during my time there (even getting recognized by name on men’s basketball senior night). I’m extremely happy to see what the school has now. In my opinion, it’s much better and it’s great to see in encompass the whole student body. Gang Green was an exclusive little club. Niner Nation is everyone.

this I know, I just have to throw that in there

so GG had 104 all to itself??

That was always my problem with GG. But, it never bothered me, people paid to get worse seats than we got. Haha.

I just hated the compartmentalizing of our student body. Campers here, Greeks here, Gang Green here.

I got the Athletics Annual Report a week or so ago. In it is a list of donors and they include the NNG donors. I think that this is great. It recognizes them and it gets students started on the path to being life-long Niners fans and supporters.

It was actually 110 and 111 I believe (when they needed 111). There was a points system in place for those two sections, but there was often not even enough people to fill 110. It’s one of those triangle shaped corner sections.

Ah the fight between gang green and the kings were something of legend!

I always liked the name Gang Green, but I like Niner Nation too. I was already in the almuni when it got rolling. It made sense to try and build the student group Gang Green into an official group, but just by it’s birth as a group of friends I can fully understand why it did not work out.

I want to hear the story about the mid to late 80s student group the N.U.T.S. Niners something something something.

I agree. I mentioned to my wife how impressed I was with the long list. Y’all aredoing a great job with NNG. And for how young it is, that is great! I hope your retainage is good for students and loyal alumni turn around is good.

This, and if anyone knows the story it would be good to post it in NN History 4901

This is one of the best aspects of NNG in my mind. It’s so smart to develop a connection with students while on campus and within easy access of all of the sporting events so hopefully they come back when they graduate and eventual give $$ too.

The gang green that is talked about in this thread was a revival of the original 70’s group, if I remember right. And yeah, N.U.T.S. too. (“Show us you’re NUTS?”)

yeah - a point has been made to make sure students realize that they are official donors

the beauty of all of it is the attempt to develop better connectivity between the 49er club and the alumni associations - getting people to come back should be just as much our goal is it is to get them to sign up and be a part of all the fun as students in the first place.

What did N.U.T.S. spell out? Could we change the N & U to a T & I?
