The situation in that area is terrible and all the families are in my prayers
This whole ordeal is surreal on too many counts to mention.
I know this may be considered throwing more āfuel on the fireā, but I really donāt understand it, given the relative location of New Orleans to sea level.
Q.2. Why did the levees fail?A.2. What failed were actually floodwalls, not levees. This was caused by overtopping which caused scouring, or an eating away of the earthen support, which then basically undermined the wall.
These walls and levees were designed to withstand a fast moving category 3 hurricane. Katrina was a strong 4 at landfall, and conditions exceeded the design.
Q.3. Why only Category 3 protection?
A.3. That is what we were authorized to do.
Iām not a storm chaser, but providing only category 3 protection seems like minimal protection for an area that size. As far as Iām concerned, the Gulf seems to get a cat 3, at least once a year. Iām kinda shocked (of course money plays a part in it) they wouldnāt consider greater protection from doomsday.
In a related story, how do you make a choice on this one:
According to the mayor, Blackhawk helicopters were scheduled to pick up and drop massive 3,000-pound sandbags in the 17th Street Canal breach, but were diverted on rescue missions. Nagin said neglecting to fix the problem has set the city behind by at least a month.
Fix the breach or rescue people?? I gotta believe you try to save people 1st, which arguably makes the mayor seems more interested in the city than the people.
Did anyone see the oil platform that washed up on the beach at Dauphin Island?
Probably the craziest footage Iāve yet seen. The local Mayor said that he honestly has no idea where it came from.
I gotta find a picture of it.
[edit] - Not the best shot, but check out the big beach cottage for scale:
The aerial view on TV was insane.
PS - Dauphin Island is in 'Bama.
The 20,000+ people in the Superdome are being relocated to the Houston Astrodome.
they showed a pic on msnbc last night of a hotel that was somehow moved several hundred feet, but went around a hotel it was next toā¦amazing.

I saw that too. This will be way worse than Camille, Hugo, or Andrew in terms of monetary damages. Unbelieveable.

Please pray for Louisiana. This is going to go down as the greatest disaster in U.S. history. The whole country needs to provide needed help and financial assistance similar to the outpouring after 9-11.

I donāt want to seem insensitve to a horrible situation, but if the people had followed orders to leave the city as they were repeatedly told to do, the efforts could be focused on limiting the damags rather than plucking people from roof tops.
āneglecting to fix the problem that has delayed recovery by a MONTHā probably has cost more lives than they saved in diverting the helicopter.
Keep in mind many people didnāt leave because they didnāt have the means. No car, no money for a hotel, etc. In a city with over a million people you will have tens of thousands without the ability to leave on their own.

The crime IMO is that those who could get out and chose not to are stealing resources from those who couldnāt help themselves.
Sick satellite photos here from NOAA, http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/katrina/KATRINA0000.HTM. Click on a box and then annother box for that area. The winds and water damage from above show the damage from surges and flooding.

the day before the Hurricane hits - for bars and restaurants to act like nothing is wrong and serve up big helpings of booze and a party atmosphere for people was not very responsible but then again this has never been a mature, responsible town.
My sister and bro-in -law live about six blocks from the dome. My cousin and her husband live just across the bridge of lake P. My sister canāt get to her place but assumes that they have been looted since everything they have seen on TV near their area has been. My cousinās house across the bridge in a very nice res. area has been stripped. Donāt fool yourselves folks the media wonāt give you the facts. Many of the people who stayed behind stayed for the soul pourpose of looting after the fact. They were too stupid to understand the power of the storm and in their greed were killed.Good riddence. Did anyone catch the videio of the O.N. police women HELPING in the looting effofts. This pretty much sums up this shit hole of a city. I piss on the whole place.
Some of the most amazing information (and rawest) I have gotten was from live internet scanner streams of emergency management channels. There are channels on IRC dedicated to providing nothing more than text accounts of what they are hearing as well. If you can handle the flamewars and trollers, itās interesting the information out there on Fark.com
The satellite photo link HP posted is disturbing. Check this photo out:

If you look closely near the bridge, there are signs people made on the ground saying āHELP!ā. This is on Grand Isle, way down to the south. Those people are doomed.
No one will be going over either bridge across Lake Ponchatrain either, http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/storms/katrina/24431117.jpg. I can not believe the amount of trash washed up in some of these photos.

No I do not. But I do feel that the government is doing as good a job as can be done. This conclusion is baised from people I know who are there. Once again you will here nothing of this from the media. This is a social and ethnic problem.
