OT: Hurricane Katrina

With all of the blame that people are putting only on the federal government, how about some accountability from the local and state level.
Here is a picture of busses that could have been called by the mayor to evacuate the city.

They would have worked much better if the mayor had used them during his 36hour advanced notice!

i hate how politics is getting played in this but the media can not help themselves then you have one ‘civil rights’ leader after another blaming the ‘white man’ instead of really helping out a bad situation. BUT, that mayor down there is worthless…compare/contrast the leadership of guilani/pataki on 9/11 to that of N.O. mayor/blanco…that mayor is not going to be known as ‘americas mayor’ after the way he has behaved…its little different situations but leadership is leaderhsip…you either have it or you do not.

wow...

I’m getting sick of the civil rights leaders pulling the race card out on this one. I don’t think anyone involved in FEMA sat around in an office and thought that they would be extra slow just because 70% of New Orleans is black. What a ridiculous assertion. Black leaders lose credibility when they make foolish accusations.

i couldnt agree more, it hasn't exactly made me open my wallet if you ask me. Especially the murder and rape going on in the superdome, and the looting. Also I heard today that yesterday a lady got an army ration of food who hadnt eaten in about 3 days and then complained it was cold. What the heck? Also the Mayor saying GD twice isnt going to win him a lot of praise from a few people. then the national black caucus lady gets up there and says "i am ashamed of America" I know these are a TINY percentage of the people but its what the media decides to post and it makes us all feel that it is an opinion shared by a much larger group.

No worry, my poor ass will donate a second time tomorrow to make up for you.

Glad we can use the Sports Forum to fire up the blame game. Way to go guys.
Wouldn’t dare use the Politics Forum for that so that the good people of NNN don’t have to go there if they don’t want.

AP release on August 28:

The mayor called the order unprecedented and said anyone who could leave the city should. He exempted hotels from the evacuation order because airlines had already cancelled all flights.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco, standing beside the mayor at a news conference, said President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.

lots of lives were saved due to this, on other hand people in the city didn’t take it completely serious leaving bars open serving booze and all night of hurricane. would’ve been nice had the city and state had a plan since they’ve known this scenario could happen for the past 50 years…that gov. can likely forget running again…I realize many do not understand Federalism and why the gov and mayor would need to be contacted.

This disaster highlights a sad fact of American politics, many state and local governments are completely dysfunctional, and in a crisis totally depend upon outside (i.e. Federal) agencies for leadership, initiative, and resources.

actually i do plan on giving, and my whole family is giving, and then giving me the reciepts as if I gave, so i can then turn the reciepts into my HR director who is matching dollar for dollar. I wonder how many people turned the channel on NBC’s fundraiser after Kanye West’s rant…can’t wait to see his next mtv cribs episode.

http://media.putfile.com/Kanye—Red-Cross-Benefit-768K Mike Meyers face is so funny.

It’s pretty amazing when you look at the planning and preparation for the D-Day invasion.

Now, 60 years later, on our own soil, no cloud of secrecy, no foreign army - you look at the planning and preparation of what might have been a direct hit Category 5.

Yeah, Kanye openly displays the lack of class of much of hip hop. Total Disrespect. Why would NBC put him on there anyways? Could of guessed he was a loose cannon. Why not put on 50cent and Fat Joe so they could cuss each other out too?

for the record, for mr. kayne, the president tried to go on wednesday, the day after the levee bust and his advisors wouldn’t let him b/c it wasn’t safe enough…possibly b/c the idiots down there creating anarchy.

I bet Kayne’s business handlers are reminding him today of what demographic buys majority of his music.

why the city and state of gov didn’t have a plan at all for a cat4/5 scenario and how to evacuate and needed the potus to call and appeal for it first is mind boggling.

This kayne character is an idiot, however the only thing worse than guys like him are Bush apologists who speak like they have first hand knowledge.

Since when do “advisors” control the president. “They wouldn’t let him”? Give me a break.

I’m no democrat but Bush is indefensible. This may be the biggest moron to ever be elected into any office. Did you see his interviews in N.O.? It was disgusting the way he fumbled all over himself while trying to dodge questions with that moronic, sh*t eating grin on his face.

Did anyone know he was the only MLB owner to vote against instituting the wild card? It is now considered one of the best moves in the history of professional sports.

What a clown and an F’ing liar.

Pi never speaks like he has first hand knowledge.

Seriously!

I"m still wondering how people can lay the majority of the blame at the feet of the federal government on this? State and local governments are responsible for making sure that they are prepared for things like this.

Everyone at the local levels are looking to pass this off to the federal government. That’s a load of crap.

Thanks for that invaluable insight.

just telling what a commentator said on news this morning, going into an unsafe place like NO and get security detail in tact so the potus is safe isn’t just going to happen with a magic wand…especially when the mayor of the city is hiding inside a hotel during that time himself.

the whole situation just goes to prove you can’t live your life being dependent on the government to solve all problems and the need to take personal responsibility…sadly the power hungry opportunist who spent the better part of the 20th century saying otherwise created this mindset and NO is a place that overwhelmingly still supports this and well observe the pyschological fruits.

the reality of what happened also isn’t hitting home, the place flooded tuesday and they started sending people in on wednesday even though the place was flooded and hard to get into. the national guard deployment is the state’s responsibility and FEMA was in place but had to coordinate with state/local gov’s and apparently they had completely fell apart. I read 60% of the NO police force has quit already, guess to be able to loot without their badges on.

This was a bad performance by every level of government (local, state, and federal). I cant believe that after 9-11, the country could be this badly prepared to deliver aid and perform a mass evacuation. This could have been a dirty bomb or some other sort of massive chemical attack in any city. Something with a lot less warning and a lot worse than a few feet of water. I would hope for a better results than what was shown this week.

here’s an idea of how soft americans have got in the last 100 years…

Looters found despoiling the dead were summarily executed by the militia - stood against the nearest wall or pile of debris and shot without the hindrance of a trial. The same brutal justice was delivered to amateur photographers. “Word received from Galveston today indicates that Kodak fiends are being shot down like thieves. Two, it is stated, were killed yesterday while taking pictures of nude female bodies.”

— Dallas News, September 14, 1900.

galveston is still a shell of itself if youve ever been there.
