OT: Should any young person move to Winston?

I’m half heartedly looking at an opportunity in Winston right now. Just wanted to get the advice of anybody on the board as to whether it would be remotely feasible for a single 20-something to move up there.

Keep in mind that ever since moving to Atlanta, moving back to Charlotte has become tougher and tougher since I’m so used to all the things that a bigger city has to offer.

Anyway, just wondered if anything has changed up there since I interviewed for a training program there in 1998. That was quite an experience because the interview was in the RJR building and people were smoking not only in the building, but in the elevator!

Any comments are welcome…

warthogs baseball = the only reason you need B)

Its not a bad place but there isnt alot that goes on. Of course Ziggy’s is always a cool place to go to see a good music show.

Winston Salem is a big arts town. If you’re into art and theater and stuff like that, you might like it. Winston Salem used to be the richest city in North Carolina and the 2nd richest in the nation in the late 19th and earth 20th centuries. Most of that was because of tobacco and textiles, so now there are a lot of abandoned warehouses that have been turned into art galleries and things of that nature. I’ve always heard its a very interesting town.

If you are planning on remaining single for a while you would probably regret leaving Atlanta. Winston has it’s 20 something scene but obviously is pretty small. Speaking for a town under 200,000 though it has quite a bit of people in the same boat you are in.

I think it is an ideal place to be as a young married couple or with young kids. Light traffic, good restaraunts, good economy, nice neighborhoods, close proximity to the mountains. I have loved living in the Triad.

I’d check-out ps211 and SECCA, two very stimulating places at times.

I lived in Winston (either full-time or part-time) almost all of my life and still spend lots of time there.

If you are young and single, I would stay away. It’s not a bad place for a married couple as long as you don’t mind the smoke, and even that is getting better.

Ziggy’s is a great place. Now, concerning the arts, a lot of their so-called arts scene is way overrated. Charlotte has by far more arts, especially the performing arts.

If you thought the move from Atlanta to Charlotte limited your options on stuff to do, just wait until you move to Winston. The WInston-Salem Journal still refers to th 49ers as UNCC too.

Ok, now here are the advantages of living in Winston: 1) less traffic 2) we have lots of alums in Forsyth County 3) NO OBSERVER (but the Journal is just as bad…Wake fans gripe about it as much as some of us gripe about the Observer).

One more thing… with ONE EXCEPTION, I’d say the women in Charlotte are much better looking.

If you are young and single, I would stay away.

Ditto…ATL, i’m 27 and just moved back to Charlotte from Winston a little over a year ago. If you are young, single, and used to a big city, this isn’t the place for you. Trust me.

I grew up in Winston. Move away! It is a city with NO GROWTH.

They sold out to Dell, as much as I hate to say it, W-S is not the place. Greensboro is showing some potential at the moment.

It all depends what your looking for, if you still go out drinking 5 nights a week, Winston is not your town. Winston has everything that you would find on a big city, but it is on a smaller scale and you have to work alittle harder to find it as opposed to a big city where you just run in to it. I will list the advantages that I think Winston has over a big city.

ADVANTAGES:

 • NO traffic - If your use to Atlanta and Charlotte this is a big deal.

 • Everything is close - It takes 20 minutes to drive from the fartherest point in the city to it’s opposite end.

-Ziggy’s- If you like live music, Ziggy’s is one of the top venues in the southeast.

-Wake Forest - ACC BAsketball and Football in your backyard with a high availability of tickets.

-Emerging downtown- Lots of new restaurants and a brewery making downtown more and more of a social destination.

-Housing is very afordable compared with a big city.

-Single women- There seems to be many more single women the guys.

Winston is the perfect place for married people who have or are looking to start a family. It is also a good place for the single person looking to settle down. It is not the ideal place for the single person still wanting to “party” but there are worse places.

There’s inner tubing down the Dan River.

More than that, Rockingham and Stokes Counties want to heavily promote the river as a tourist attraction.

I’m from Pilot Mtn so Winston is almost home. Had a blast there, but it’s been almost twenty yrs ago. Damn, Showdawg is getting old, heh heh.

Move to Asheville. Lots of easy fat girls here.

I guarantee I have been drunk and on a tube down the Dan River more than anyone around. I am not proud of it but it is a fact. I could also give you a couple of "Deliverance" type stories (no not any squealing like a pig but scary enough).

Tubing down the Dan in the early 80’s was like traveling back in time or to another world. HP, I actually had a buddy who was drunk and pissing off that bridge and fell off. I thought he was dead when I realized what had happened but you know what they say about drunks.

There are more water mocasains / cottonmouth snakes in that river than I have ever seen anywhere. They would actually shock the water during the summer to clear them out. We would get my brother drunk till he passed out then send him on an unconscious recon mission for cottonmouths. This consisted of directing his tube in the current toward the snakes and overgrowth to flush them out. If you knew my brother you would understand. He is also available for parties.

As sad as this post is I will go ahead and admit there is nothing like partying on a river with an eighteen year old hot b*tch that talks with a country accent. The picture usually went like this, soaking wet and drunk on a tube with only cut off blue jeans, a cowboy hat, and a bikini top that is straining to hold her in. That my friends is redneck heaven.

ShowDawg, if I saw this in the water in any condition…

you’d see this white boy running on the water!

Show Dog- I’ d like to hear some Deliverance stories

Showdawg, we were tubing the Dan one time when the river was pretty high. One of my friends was in a one-man raft and went under a bunch of tree limbs. A snake was in the tree limbs, and the next thing we knew the snake was in the raft and my friend was in the water. Everything was ok though because he did not spill his beer.

We had a similar experience while tubing the Yadkin from Crutchfield to Rockford one time too.
