Our Student Section

It’s been a long time since I’ve been on NNN, so allow me to re-introduce myself. Hi. I’m Zack. I used to be a UNCC student, co-student section leader, and Arby’s employee. Now I’m a doctoral candidate, live in Atlanta, and teach 18 year olds how to use commas for a living. It was really a lateral move.

I’m posting because I watched the Niners/Davidson game last night, and I had a question. What do you guys think of the current state of our student section?

As someone who formerly spent a lot (a LOT) of time evaluating, bolstering, and trying to improve what was then Section 104, I was eager to see what the current crop of students were bringing to the table last night, particularly since I knew we were going to get crushed. Which we did, in case you missed it. I had trouble evaluating the student section though, for a variety of reasons (shaky illegal stream, horrible soul-crushing blowout loss to Davidson, still being thrown off by the new placement of the section itself), so I thought I’d temporarily suspend my necessary messageboard sabbatical to see what the general consensus of NNN is on our current student section.

Let me emphasize that I do not feel comfortable having an opinion of my own on this and am just looking for honest feedback on a subject that is of great interest to me, particularly since our actual team is so unwatchable. Lord knows if anyone had breathed a word of disparagement about Section 104 while I was co-running it I would have lost my mind and written a 3,000 word defense of what we were doing. I’m hoping that some of the current students are on here and can tell me how they feel about it. And, of course, I want to hear from longtime fans too.

I’ve missed you guys, by the way. I hope you’re all doing well.

It was really a lateral move.

I lol’d at that… hard

As for the students… The fact they show up makes them OK in my book… However they might be accused of being a little F’d in the head by those in the mental health profession.

I like the new layout, helps Halton sound louder. They don’t chant much, but haven’t had much to chant about this year either.

That’s nothing new…

We start winning again and the students and every NINER fan in Halton will go fucking crazy-loud at games. No matter where they are sitting. You know, like it used to be when we WERE winning.

In theory, the Forty! Niners! call and response chant should work better, having the two student sections yell at each other. Before, the students were yelling at geriatric alumni, so it ended up as FORTY!!! niners…

Yo Zack, your last day at Laser Quest was my first day. I think I also remember you working at the writing center for a while too? I think that’s where I heart about the LQ job. I was in 104 a bit during your jr and sr years I think. Anyway… welcome back.

I do think over all it helps to have students at both ends of the court in that it funnels the sound down the court instead of directly across at one point. With that being said, sometimes it appears that one side is a little weak, and it’s also less cohesive. I’m not sure if this is due to lack of leadership or because the sides are split or what. It’s also difficult to tell because I feel like student attendance has been steadily dropping for a while now. I’ll ask my sister about this, she’s a SR.

As a current student, I’ll say we have a some very dedicated fans in the student section every game. But, beyond those fans there is little to no school spirit. If Curry hadn’t been there I think there would have been about half the students. Everyone of my friends that don’t normally go to games went last night to see Curry.

So our AD changed the date of the game at Davidson’s request just so our students could get a chance to see Curry, shout out his name, and take photos of him. Meanwhile our players and coaching staff were out there working their asses off trying to get a win for the students.

Ouch. Did they in fact do so?

Davidson requested to change the date (Supposed to be tonight / night of Hornets game) and we said sure.

Here is my take so take it for what it’s worth. Most games the students struggle to fill the lower ends. Last night was a pleasant surprise as there were lots of students. A couple of issues when more than the normal students go to their first game. Most have no clue as to when to chant or what to chant. Kinda like a player in that the more time you get under your belt the better you get. The other issue is that the cheerleaders are not doing a good job leading cheers. They can’t even figure out how to spell niners during a timeout, but overall the cheerleader squad is disappointing from when I was a student in the late 90’s. When there is a timeout, the place just goes dead. The University needs to do a better job at getting kids to come out and support the team.

Yes, they did. I was sitting in 105 and the students behind the goal started a chant calling out his name. Many were also trying to take photos. I looked down to the other end and some of those students, who were actually closer to Curry, were also going goo-goo-gah-gah trying to take his photo. To be fair, most of these students acting like dumbasses were female students.

I thought it was stupid at the time to change the day of the game and I have not changed my opinion. We should never let Davidson dictate anything we do. Also… booing him would have been just as bad.

Was Curry at the game? I didn’t notice.

I did see that 104 and 105 were pretty full for maybe the first time since they moved the students. What caused that?

104 is grad students still right? I just assumed they showed up for Curry and it being Davidson. Same thing with general admission for 105.

While I appreciate Davidson’s a rival…I’m not sure what the board expected.

Our basketball program has been a joke for the majority of our students lives, and its not like kids showed up wearing Davidson gear. They came to the game, cheered on the program and took pictures of the best basketball player in the league. Kinda hard to fault them IMO.
