playing zone

i have a question. can anybody tell me why were playing zone yesterday the whole game? we were playing a small team that could only hurt us by shooting threes.

Actually, on the season they shoot about 27% or 29% (can’t remember) as a team from 3, so it made sense. I still think we should play 3-2 over a 2-3 so we can cover more of the perimeter, but I oh well, I don’t coach.

Because they hit their first 5 threes as we played man.

And it worked.

it didnt really work, they just didnt hit their shots. they didnt start in man when they hit the threes, they were in zone. you shouldt play a zone against a team that is smaller, less athletic and lacks depth.

I don’t know about all that, but you play a zone against a team who shoots the 3 poorly and to conserve your lack of depth.

Wait a second. You’re saying that we shouldn’t play zone against a team that has poor outside shooting?

I’m really confused.

If Winthrop was hitting their shots in the second half, I would understand your complaint. But they weren’t. Winthrop was dared to shoot the us out of the zone, but they couldn’t do it.

Dijuan picking up a couple fouls in the first half had to have been a reason for it as well.

Looked to me like we were in zone the whole game. Sure they hit there first 5 three’s but they were always gunna start missing. It worked good

Nope. We started M2M. Lutz mentioned it in the postgame. He said we changed to a zone after Winthrop lead 13-5.

And it worked the whole rest of the game. And Winthrop missed shots? Uh yeh, that’s the point of playing a particular defense.

Put Utter on the bench as a coach!

Another reason, I would guess, as to why we’re playing so much zone is due to our depth issues. Can’t afford excessive fouls (when there are few options on the bench) that come when the game is more uptempo and attacking as you get in a man-to-man environment.

If they scored less points than us, then I think it worked. Zone does a few things for a team like Charlotte who only played 8 guys for the bulk of the game. You don’t get tired as quick as you would playing Man and running through screens etc and are less likely to pick up cheap fouls - both good things with limited depth.

Zone can also hide your weaker defenders, so someone like Ian who is slower is not asked to stick a faster guard all game, he can float around and conserve some energy while forcing them to shoot jumpshots. The zone worked because they didn’t shoot well enough on a consistent basis to pull our guys out. When teams hit those shots, holes in the zone start to open up and that’s where we get exploited.
