The permanence of the college teams is a not often talked about factor in the popularity of college sports vs pro sports.

In college there is not an asshole owner it’s owned by the school.

There is no risk that they will move or threaten to move the team.

Wake Forest University moved though it was just a little over 100 miles from its original location. Of course, that was all about money too!

True.

That was a long time ago and involved a huge gift of property right?

I just can’t see a major university moving these days.

It would have to be either via government action to in theory may something better or a private (likely a small one) moving to try to survive.

Are we sure about that?

If schools start spinning off their ADs as their own companies is it really out of the realm of possibilities UNC football and basketball don’t move to a city with more money? Sure staying in NC but if they sever all ties with the school what’s to stop it?

It sounds ridiculous but if you went back 25 years and described where we are now people wouldn’t believe it.

Yeah, RJ Reynolds wanted a nice private school in his backyard so he just moved one instead of starting a new one. I don’t know that we’ll ever see that kind of thing happen again with antitrust laws the way they are.

FWIW, RJ Reynolds died in 1918.

Fair, I guess it was his decendents that made it happen but still.

Never going to happen.

The bottom of the market would drop out.

Let’s say UNC moved its football team to charlotte.

Would attendance improve?

I seriously doubt it.

No campus, no Franklin street, few students.

Panthers fans would not redirect their resources.

I just don’t see it.

Duke is another school that moved from its original location, which in this case was just south of High Point. Founded as Trinity College in 1838, the institution relocated to Durham in 1892. Changed name in 1924 after the establishment of the Duke Endowment by industrialist James B. Duke and in honor of his late father. Like the town of Wake Forest, the town of Trinity still exists.

I thought the market would drop out when historical rivalries went away or when players got paid or when players got 7 and 8 years of eligibility or when tv ratings started dictating who plays in important post season games or when players were free to just move whenever they want or when donors were asked to donate to pay players on top of reg donations or when tax dollars started going to pay players or when schools basically admitted academics don’t matter - but here we are.

If chapel hill played Charlotte they would clean up. Sponsorships, alumni, players….

I’m not saying they should or it’s a good idea but as all of this is showing the only thing, ONLY THING, that matters is $$$

I keep thinking well surely this is what turns the fans off, but they keep pushing.

Gambling brings new eyeballs/ fans/ degenerates every new season.

I can ruin some of the suspense.

He mostly talks about loving the kids, how hard the schedule was, but that his players finished 5-7 (4-4) and were poised for a strong season this year. Said he came to Mike with a 6 year plan and the braggadocio was because he knew he couldn’t land players if he said we sucked and said it was a tough job etc.

He then went on to praise Albin and ask Niner fans to give him a chance.

What a podcast. Good on that crew for having Biff on. Honestly, respect to Biff for going on the thing.

That said, the issues are still the issues. He can blame fans all he wants. That’s fine. Nobody gets 6 years in college football anymore. He certainly would have gotten more than 1.5 years if his leadership felt like things were going in a positive direction. Hindsight being what it is, he needed someone to manage PR badly.

Sure does take a different approach to his language of ā€œeverything takes timeā€ from when he 1st took the job and (I’m paraphrasing) ā€œI should get fired if we don’t make the CFP in year 1.ā€

He’s so full of :poop:!

Great interview by the guys! I will also credit Biff for doing the interview. I got a good laugh when Biff said, regarding the players that went in the portal this year, ā€œAll those guys would have stayed.ā€ Sure Biff. I am glad we have Albin!
