Poll: Do you have faith in Coach Sanchez?

We are certain

Here are the details of Sanchez salary and extensions.

  • Original contract- March 2018-March 2023- $450k base and $200k supplemental

  • Amendment 1- April 1, 2019- 2 year extension to March 2025 and supplemental bumped to $225K

  • Amendment 2- April 2, 2020- 1 year extension to March 2026

The 2 year extension in 2019 is baffling more so than 1 year this year.

Yeah I do not understand that at all. The two year should have been plenty. We tack on an additional because of Covid??? Lol

clt says it took 8 days for Mike and Phil to sign?

I wish my employer was so generous.

Would be a little more understandable if his name was popping up for other jobs but that hasn’t been the case & the performance so far definitely hasn’t warranted any extensions. The original five years would have been plenty & then maybe reevaluate after this year (year 3). Really hope he can turn things around cause if not we’re gonna have to endure this pain for a lot longer. May be long enough to really screw us for any future conference realignment.

How about getting Melvin Watkins back? He is a part of our legacy and he had some good teams during his tenure here. He may have gotten a little over his skis at A&M but I wouldn’t mind seeing him back.

Melvin is 66 and went 61-112 at A&M. He was a little more than over his skis. He was Vinko Bogataj on the Wide World of Sports intro. No thanks.

Melvin is retired and playing with his grandkids.

Extra credit for supplying the name of the personification of “the agony of defeat”

I named him in the post. Vinko Bogataj.

Yes, and I gave you extra credit. Now you’re just bragging

Sorry I read it wrong. :grimacing:

For the young uns who don’t know WTF we’re talking about. One of the best ever program intros.

I’m going to be honest. Our hoops program was DOA when Sanchez got here. His recruiting has been elite relative to a program that did not have a pulse upon his arrival. I respect that.

He also exceeded expectations. There were some horrendous losses, but absolutely nobody expected us to be tier 1 in this league last year.

My objection to what I see from Sanchez in this moment is that he may have the safest job in college basketball right now. We can’t even consider letting him walk. Supica and Shep have been absolutely awful. Non-negotiably awful. You can blame covid, or fatigue, or just say they aren’t that good, but they have been miserable in this scheme. So knowing that we can’t fire him, and knowing how bad they’ve been, and knowing that Covid is giving most mid major (sigh) coaches a free year anyway, and knowing that we’ve already pooped our pants out of conference, WHY NOT PLAY THE YOUNG GUYS FROM YOUR TWO CONSECUTIVE ELITE RECRUITING CLASSES?

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

When I went back and watched the App St game I realized that Shep wasn’t the worst player on the court. It was actually Matos because he is still learning the offense and defense. He killed us the first 10 minutes or we would have been up by 20.

We run a complex offense (mostly Princeton Chin) that many guys don’t run well until year 3 or even 4. There are so many options that an individual player can do you have to play with each other a while to get the best out of it. That leads to the problem of guys not being in the system long enough because of transfers. With Robb and Martin leaving that set us behind. I think if we keep recruiting well, the guys we need will only leave for a better conference. There is nothing a coach can do about that. I think Robb and Martin left because they saw reduced minutes coming. Guys want to play 35 per game, but if we can get them happy with 25 and have 9 to 10 guys good enough to see the floor that long we would be really good.

I’m not going to argue at all. I thought jhery wasn’t good at all v app. I just give him benefit of the doubt for being new. But once again, you just listed two reasons in favor of my argument. 1) jhery wasn’t very good. 2) you need experience in this system to succeed. Let the young guys get after it.

Guys don’t worry, we are right on track for making the NIT year 8. We are learning and growing every game, just ask coach. These games don’t matter at all. Each season doesn’t matter. They are all incremental steps in the overall process to get better. The product is finished when coach says so and not a day before.

Doesn’t that sound ridiculous?

A complex offense? Three guys move and two guys screen and post. If you’re not basketball savvy and do not understand the concept of spacing then it may be hard but this is a simple offense.
