After seeing the size of the crowd last night, I began to wish that the SoCon was a halfway decent basketball conference… I would love to play schools within a day’s drive of here night in and night out. Of course, it would be too much of a step down for the A10, so it’s a moot point.
That being said, of all of the schools with adequate facilities (>4,000 seats) in NC and SC, who would you like to see us play home-and-home on a continual basis.
Since this is a theoretical poll, let’s ignore current home-and-home contracts (App, D-suck, and Winthrop)
I didn’t pick App State. I don’t think we should ever go back up to Boone. I picked (all the ACC teams listed), Davidson, Winthrop, UNCW, CofC, and South Carolina. Didn’t pick ECU, they aren’t worth playing.
I took, of course, all of the ACC teams plus USC. However, on second thought… I wish I could change my vote. I don’t want Carolina coming into Halton. I would be on TarHole Patrol all night and wouldn’t be able to enjoy the game. Actually, I would probably get so pissed off at the students that came in Carolina gear that I would get myself permanently banned.
Also took App and Western because it’s a chance to go to the Mountains, same deal with C of C as a trip to go to Charleston. UNCW because I think it would make a great series.

If you pick other… who?
I know I’m in the minority and that’s ok. But, I think we should add football and join the SoCon. Gotta start somnewhere 1-AA, why not be local and have some good away games that we could drive to.
Also, our best program given the last few years and direction is baseball. The A-10 literally has the worst teams I’ve ever seen in some cases. SoCon baseball is pretty damn good.
And before we start talking about taking a step back in Basketball- please.

I kind of agree with this actually.
The way I see it, in the optimistic direction that our program is heading (with Braswell and Spears)… the SoCon with us could possibly become a two-bid league. I think we have a better chance of getting a consistent auto-bid out of the SoCon… more often than not it’s either us or Davidson. Aggressive non-conference scheduling, even if we have to play on the road more, could put us in a position for an at-large if we do well in conference.
I know the quality of teams is higher in the A10, but the SoCon would bring in much more exciting games, IMO, and would draw more Charlotteans to our games than games vs. Rhode Island, UMass, and Duquesne.
I want a home-and-home with Pepperdine, San Diego State, Hawaii, Colorado, Utah, Nevado-Reno, UNLV, and Brigham Young.
The thing I don’t get is the home and home. I would like to think that we could still get 2 for 1’s with a lot of these schools. (us being the 2 homes) (no not the bcs teams)

OMG----They have 1 or 2 teams THIS YEAR better than us and because of that we should be OK moving to the SoCon. You MUST be drunk!
Well, I’m not drunk and I’ve thought this for a while. The A-10 sucks period. X is good but I’m not talking about the quality of teams in Bball as much as location. I hate being in the damn A-10. Drive from Asheville to see Fordham, Duquense, etc?? Not me dude.
And BTW, I know for a fact that there are at least 2 teams better than us. Quite frankly, I doubt we’d be .500 in the SoCon.

I’ll give you having the regional rivalries would be nice. But I still think it’s a step back in competitiveness for basketball.

The A10 may suck, but not nearly as much as the SoCon. I think A10 was ranked 7th last year and SoCon was around 21st, their usual spot. If anyone thinks we have issues recruiting now, try recruiting in the SoCon.
Hootie, I know what you’re saying and I have to agree with your “location argument”, but we’ve come way to far to throw it all away now. We need to be IN POSITION for the next conference shakeups… not in position to watch us play in another high school gym.
Most BCS schools do not have the luxury of driving “down the road” watch an away game. It’s a long way from Arizona to Washington. It’s a long way from Miaimi to Boston. And Charlotte is closer to most (if not all) A10 schools than Columbus is to Minnesota.
