Question: Would you consider a 7-7 record against that schedule to be a success?
[edit - I added the Farleigh Dickinson game, as a W, which would mean an 8-6 OOC record]
against THIS OOC sched, with this young of a team, i definitely would. because if we can go even against that caliber of opponents, they better get the hell out of the way in coming years. especially half of them without our starting point guard.
A young team and Gerrity out for nearly half of those games. BTW, the Fairleigh-Dickson game is missing from the preview. The issue of Gerrity being out is more than no Gerrity it’s also effecting the #2. And playing Lee at the #1 will wear Lee down more. I think .500 in OOC will be a success. I’m not saying it’s impossible or improbable, but it will be labelled as a success I believe.
I think .500 would be good. I have no idea what to expect, because we only have 1 starter returning (Ian will be 6th man when Gerrity is eligible). This is the largest group of newbies we’ve had at one time since the 2000-2001 season. I’m not expecting the same results as that team had, but hopefully the athleticism of this team will overwhelm some teams that we might otherwise lose to because of inexperience. We’ll see.

6-8 OOC… and I’m being gracious by giving the Wake game, and I could also see us dropping the final game in the Virgin Islands.

If we start the sked out 6-1, Judy should give Bobby a 5 year deal right then. Beating High Point is no easy task and we certainly know how difficult Wake and Davidson will be.

I really like your optimism but you made a mistake. We’ll also beat Clemson to finish 11-3.

Realistically, I have us losing to High Point, Georgia Tech, dropping our first Virgin Isle. game, Davidson, So. Ill., Maryland and Clemson. But somehow, I still feel that 7-7 in our OOC is being a tad optimistic. But if we gel early and stay healthy, then we could win 7 or 8 of those. To me, that’s certainly a success against that schedule, with such a young/new team.
I’m going to be honest with you, the thought of losing to HPU makes me sick.
We have, as an athletic institution, no business ever losing to a big south school. Especially at home.
I can understand we are probably not going to be very good this year, but the Big South? No way we should lose a game to a team in that conference. Losing to SoCon teams is hard enough.

QFT.
The “we can’t recruit in an acc state” excuse goes flat out the window on this game. There is no reason that with the money and time we put into just being a basketball school, that this game is even a concern. Down year or not, top of the big south or not, we should never lose this game.
as far as record, I just want to win the games we should, and pick up an acc game or two. I just want to see us play good basketball, not take 24 threes in a game, not allow arizona reid score a career high, pass the ball, not see phil jones standing around the 3 point line, if we play good basketball then we will be fine. Of course it would help if we geled but quality fundamental basketball is simply quality fundamental basketball, and we have the players to do some good things.
I’m so torn by this thread. It combines something I like a lot (making fun predictions) and something I don’t like at all (settling for something that’s kind of mediocre and labelling it a success).
If we go 7-7 and look like we’ll be a .500 team forever - than the season is not a success at all. If we go through the growing pains of lengthy O-fer losing streaks and losing close to some pretty bad teams that we have no business losing to - BUT also show flashes of great things to come- then the season might actually turn out to be completely worthwhile. I don’t know if there’s a number that can be attached to success or failure this year.
I will say this - on a scale of 1 to 10, I’d put us among teams in the ‘10’ group in terms of out-of-conference schedule difficulty. I sure would feel a lot better about entering that sked if we had some kind of a warm-up beforehand. 7-7 would probably get us rated pretty high in the country and it would exceed my expectations. So chances are, i’d be pretty happy. But I’m still kind of afraid to vote - it’s like that old superstition where you never touch the trophies received prior to making it to the championship game. You never want to settle.
But I am really surprised and disappointed with Chisox. Do you really expect a Maryland team to just waltz in and beat a mighty 10-2 Charlotte team on the road?!? Jeez!
