We canât doing anything with that scholarship this spring so why waste it and screw up the team again next year. Just sit on it for a legit recruit instead of a transfer and we wonât have any what if situations like we have with Gerrity right now.
We will have two seniors down low next year and Big Phil will still be down there so giving a transfer that is a big a schollie shouldnât be a problem.
NB, what constitutes a down year? Going into this season, I figured finishing .500 would be a major accomplishment.
I junderstand what you are getting at, but .500 should NEVER be an accomplishment. The hill is steep and the road is rough this year, but thats just tough luck. You canât look at lutz and say âI know you are the CEO of the basketball team, and well you didnât have all the pieces, so .500 is good enough this year, please sign here for an extension.â
The Lutz contract situation certainly isnât helping with recruiting, but neither are the facts that we generally havenât played good basketball the last 2+ years, attendance is declining, and we havenât won a NCAA tournament game since 2001.
If Lutz can get things back on track, we will start winning some games and he will get his extension, but I donât think you can give him an extension just to help with recruiting. We arenât losing too many guys this year, so we should be in decent shape for next year already.
The next 4 games are tough and will be very telling of how this season (and Lutzâ future here) will go. Hopefully Lutz will have them fired up and refocused after the Monmouth loss. If not, we could be 4-5 or 3-6 in a couple weeks and the Lutz bashing will be at an all time high.
Totally agree!! I donât see the logic of extending a coach who very well might be out at the end of this year if he doesnât produce.I understand this might hurt recruiting somewhat, but losing lots of games to inferior teams, almost never being on national tv etc. hurts recruiting a lot more.Frankly,I think Bobby SHOULD be coaching like his job is on the line.
Please hootie, this is just a naive statement. Anytime your coach isnât guaranteed a few years, it hurts with recruiting. Wonder why we only have 1 commit so far, and really no targets. Wonder why most of our targets for 08 have went elsewhere? Including local talent.
I visit the ETSU boards a good bit and their coach just recently got an extension. I saw a poster griping about the fact how the administration SHOULDâT have waited, because it put a hurt on their early recruiting efforts with the contract being up in the air. With the season Bartow had last season he should have received an extension, but the administration didnât want to pony up right after the season, thus costing them in their recruiting efforts.
Well, first of all, we were only counting on recruiting one spot before Lewis left. So how is it killing recruiting when youâre affecting 7.7% of your roster.
Second, do you really want me to list the number of players we have lost out on when Lutz had 4-6 yrs left on his deal? Because I can. Third, would you like me to list the local talent that went elsewhere when Lutz had 4-6 yrs on his deal? Because I can.
Lastly- Why in the world would anyone want to extend him right now? If drop 4 of the next 5 or so (which I hope we do not, but could happen), get ran of the court by Wake or Davidson, then come on dude, an extension is out of the question.
Is it not obvious yet that Lutz will not be here next year? I say save the scholarship and let the next guy deal with it. We will have to make do next year with what we have.
NB, what constitutes a down year? Going into this season, I figured finishing .500 would be a major accomplishment.
Given our tough schedule and poor play the last couple of years, finishing .500 this season would be an accomplishment. However in the grand scheme of things, and considering where our program was 5+ years ago, I think that anytime we are hoping to finish .500, that should be considered a down year⌠tough schedule or not.
WHAT? You mean that even with the avalanche of mail Phil and Judy received after the High Point game they still havenât extended Lutzâ contract?
Coach Lutz and staff have done an outstanding job of recruiting the past two years. The 13th ranked recruiting clsss this year, and perhaps the last two years have produced the best back to back recruiting classes in Lutzâ tenure. How does that compare with previous years classes? Last year, if I count right we had 0 seniors who were here 4 years. This year we have one senior who came here as a freshman. The junior class has 0 members who came here as frosh. Three consecutive recruiting years producing a total of 1 four year player doesnât seem to be related to time left on contract, anymore than the recent incoming groups were due to lack of years on contract.
If coach Lutz is determined to do a great job and stay here til he retires he will be fine, both contract and recruiting wise. If he continues to blame our conference for his failures and let it be known that he would rather be in another league, a contract extension isnât going to help us much.
i would say they have done a good job of recruiting this year. i think last years class was the worst in recent memory. carlos, booker both sucked and transfered, phaler has done nothing, ian is a role player at best and while i hold out faith that dewhurst will be a good player at this point he is only a good defensive player and little threat offensively.
It does not affect your recruiting if you are going after a JUCO kid or a transfer since that time period is Spring to Summer before the upcoming year.
The conspiracy theorist in me says the administration is âlame duckingâ Lutz and already has a replacement lined up and is now setting the table for that person by having a classified senior transfer 5 games into the season but The Kinks say PARANOIA WILL DESTROY YA.
On a related note I watched NBC local sports last night and they made the mention of the game but added that this is the kind of game Judy Rose wants to schedule and consistently win. I thought that was a odd statement since I have never heard it put out that way in the past. Also before the last game in the foundation function Rose spoke about our new womens coach and she said what stood out to her most was the word on the street was she was a âbulldog recruiterâ. Hmmm
i dont consider phil, gerrity, ian and dewhurst to all be part of one group. i dont understand why everyone is so in love with ian. hes a hot and cold three point shooter(mostly cold) who if hes not hitting threes is completly useless. i love the guys hustle but hes not helping us much right now.
Can we keep this thread to its actual subject matter on âpossible prospects.â If you have no comments on current or future prospects, then donât post. If you want to rant on how ****ty recruiting is start a new thread. Sorry, Iâm just getting irritated that I continually click on this link it itâs nothing but people crying over recruiting and not âpossible prospects.â
i figured that was the direction the thread was headed down. anyways, youre right. i should be more upset since i started this thread. what does everybody feel we should go after for next year with the two remaining scholarships?
