“They’re probably twice as athletic as we are,” Fancher said. “They’re a great run-and-jump team. And they’ve got a really, really good leader in Leemire Goldwire. He’s an All-Atlantic 10 player who can score from about anywhere o n the floor.
“It’s going to be important for us to do a good job of trying to control the tempo and finding out where we’re going to be able to play and what speed we’re going to want to play so we don’t fall into their hands. I think they’re going to want to make a lot of home-run plays and make a lot of exciting plays with dunks and steals and things that will excite their crowd and get them involved in the game. We’ve got to go in and try to hit singles and not try to hit home runs with every play.”
clt asks dont they know we are charlotte?
clt, that has been discussed with their editors since the change. Powerbait knows the editor and got nowhere with him. If I recall, the editor’s son even attended the University.
Including myself, I know of at least 7 individuals who have politely spoken to the Journal about the name (most are not on this board). They seem pretty strong in their decision to not refer to us as "Charlotte".

Anyone know how they refer to UNC-Chapel Hill?
when their gameplan is to control the tempo of the game so we can’t play our game…that’s good news. that means they can’t beat us if we play our style. i remember an app fan saying something about young point guards…the press might do wonders this game. GO NINERS
About the Charlotte vs UNCC thing, I have emailed the sports editor at WS Journal. I know Powerbait has also. They have stated they will continue to refer to us as UNCC. It’s anoying as hell, but oh well I am glad to see us get pregame article.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe we can create some early turnovers by pressing their guards and keep them out of rhythm all night.
Play defense and rebound just like we did Friday… Shoot a better % and don’t get off to a slow start. If we can do those things, I like our chances.

That pre-game article is written by the reporter who covers App for the Journal.

One of their starting guards is a Division III transfer.
They have not played 1 exhibition or even 1 game yet, so it will be very important for us to play well early to hurt their confidence. No easy shots, in first 5 minutes.
The 49ers struggled with injuries and youth last year and their 14-16 record showed it. They missed out on both an NCAA and NIT berth, even though they have reached the postseason in seven of coach Bobby Lutz’s nine years at Charlotte.
This year, the 49ers welcome the 13th-ranked recruiting class in the country. They return senior guard Leemire Goldwire, who has 1,043 points and is fifth all-time in 3-points made (215) at Charlotte.

Great articles - a must read.
This Mountaineers edition has as good of a chance to get back to the NCAA tournament as any that Fancher has brought together. It has depth, size and explosion up front, though there are question marks in the backcourt.
This will be a different look than High Point (or Ottawa) - this is a good team with size. This time, it’s not Arizona Reid and a bunch of supporting players; There should be solid players all around. Rebounding will be key.
I’d expect to see Charlotte play a lot of zone defense for this game to shut down the interior.
