ever seen a Memphis basketball game? They have a rabid fan base, and big donor foundation, attendance, etc. Memphis is a big time athletic program, we are not. We pay our coach about 350k, they pay Calapari about 1m.
So that begs the question, why is that happening at Memphis, what can we take from what theyâre doingâŚif it is just a matter of money, then we should be happy with what we get and accept the fact that will be in this same predicament 10 years from now

a better question would be gonzaga, a team that doesnât have football. Memphis has football, in a state where they are second to UT. They have year round fan support, even though football isnât great, they do care about it there.
Gonzaga is consistantly in the top 25, always a threat to go deep in the tournament, has to recruit against, the pac10, and yes the acc (singler came from the northwest to go to duke) and they develop players. Butler and Southern Illinois are good examples as well.
(Removed this line because Iâm a jackass and canât read).
At least they kept it under a mil.
I wonder what Charlotte does with its 475k âprofitâ? I doubt itâs going back into the hands of the students who pay the fees yearly ⌠Maybe itâs going into investments or a football fund?
Actually just for the sake of accuracy, women's basketball spends 930k and brings in 104k, so the loss is technically 826k. Still a ton, don't get me wrong. At least they kept it under a mil.

hopefully the profit is in a reserve acctâŚwe are gonna need it because all the conference revenue is going to dry up real soon from lack of our NCAA tourny appearances and lack of other A10 program appearances/advancing.
our womens basketball (Judy and Dales baby) loses 1 million freaking dollars per year.....good god son :unhappy:

So we're losing a million dollars for a team that is 0-6?
Looking at the breakdown of the money, itâs actually shocking. I really love sports, have worked in sports, but seeing things like this just make me sick to my stomach.
And Iâm sure theyâre all good people, but youâre telling me that it really costs a million dollars to run a womenâs basketball team? That is just a disgusting amount of money.
Granted, $600,000 of that money is scholarships and salaries and canât really be altered, but dang thatâs still unfathomable.

our annual hoops tickets generate 600k, Memphis sells 3.4 mil :lmao:
our contributions rec are 687k, Memphis is 6.8m :tumble:
Mempiss gets outstanding support from the city of Mempiss, including fans, financial support, and top billing from the local media.
There are some that keep telling us our support can only come from students and alumni.
Just a random thought, but how does Memphis, which is in a lousy âbasketballâ conference, continually bring in top recruits, and stay in the top 10 year after yearâŚI mean I feel like weâre in the same predicament as far as being in a bad conference, one that doesnt generate much excitement, even though I like the A10 over CUSA, basketball wise, yet we struggle with bringing in top talent and dont even sniff the top 25. I mean is it football or coaching or the AD, what is Memphis doing that weâre not?
Adding to the other suggestions already mentioned, Calipariâs recruiting methods and how he runs a program have always been questionable. Thereâs a reason NC State stopped recruiting him.
Also, the college infrastructure is different in Tenn than it is in NC. Memphis has less in state schools to compete with. We have 4 ACC schools in the same state! Finally, we are a much younger school.

This is veering way off topicâŚbut there was an investigative article by GQ that came out a couple months ago which involved Memphis/Calipari that really raised some eyebrows. There is a link to the story in this article. The GQ story may be a long read (very thoroughly investigated), but it has really fascinated a bunch of people.
Memphis also takes the opportunity to play in a Pro arena, with Pro locker rooms, Pro venue in a great location (walk to bars restaurants, in fact the arena is on one side of the most famous streets in the city). Also they have a former Pro coach. This all really makes a big difference in recruiting and is a very good sales pitch.
The season is young, and there is still a lot to be worked on, but I reaallly like where this team is heading.
Agreed. You can just tell this is a team and when we play uptempo and drive we are tough to beat. This team always plays hard and never gives up. They donât care who they are playing against, they are not backing down. If you want to win you are going to have to TAKE the game from them. They could not have picked a better slogan than âAll Inâ.
4-2 isnât something to complain about when we have returned 1 starter and 1 contributerâŚ
-The thing I like most is how everyone picks up the slack when Lee isnât on⌠b/c last night was not his best night and Wilderness took the game over, Phil got tough, and Coley played great. This is how these guys will be utilized this year I think, contributing significantly when it countsâŚwhen our real scorer ISNâT HAVING HIS BEST NIGHTSâŚ
-Although if Wilderness keeps playing like that we might have two guys to count on, every nightâŚHow awesome would that be?
