Proposed Cougar Nickname Rejected by School District in Utah

I wonder if the NCAA will now get invloved to change the nicknames of BYU, Houston, and Washington State to a less offensive option. ::slight_smile:

The NCAA might. They already had a hissy fit about Indian names. No more Marquette Warriors, St. John’s Redmen, Syracuse Orangemen (what that has to do with Native Americans, I don’t know.) Florida St Seminoles & Illinois Fighting Illini had to get permission from the tribe. WTF? Either all are offensive or none are offensive.

I guess WSU, UH, & BYU could be the Bobcats or Mountain Lions so we don’t offend women that date younger men. :)) :stuck_out_tongue: :o ::slight_smile: 8) >:( ;D >:D :’(

I don’t think Syracuse changed from Orangemen to Orange over the Native American mandate by the NCAA. Their nickname was derived when the school changed it’s official colors from rose and green to orange in 1890. They did use a Native American mascot along the way, called the Saltine Warrior, up until 1978. Syracuse was known as the “salt city”, and the six Iroquois nations are nearby. Thus, the Saltine Warrior. Otto the Orange began being used in 1995. The name change was made for brand identity/cost savings so that they did not have separate Orangemen and Orangewomen when associating their men’s and women’s teams.

That’s what the man wants you to think X. It’s the reason I said.

I agree. They put a PC spin on it. It had ALL to do with Native American sensitivity, with which I agree. I also agree that if the respective tribes represented by FSU, et al, have no problem with these schools, I don’t either.

Syracuse changed to Orange because supposedly the word “men” is offensive to half the population, or at the very least the militant, feminazi portion of the half and their castrated boyfriends.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this is a joke and you know why they changed their name.

Orangemen = Redmen = Native American

I grew up hating Syracuse because of misinformation about the historic origination of their nickname.

So you’re saying NLP that your wife is a feminazi, & she castrated you? :))

No. What I’m saying is that I grew up hating Syracuse because of misinformation about the historic origination of their nickname.

You hated a team because of their nickname? I don’t know what origin is so horrible to drive a kid to give a damn.

clt says the redskins should keep their name, but change the logo to a potato.

lol I had a rant about this on facebook,
Super stupid story of the day. You can’t reject something because of a minor (not to mention lame) slang use. That usage of the word has been around for barely over a decade. A cougar is foremost a cat by a large margin.

And how, even then, is this offensive to older women?

Also, SCHOOL board members, alliteration is similar sounds, not identical letters.

Incorrect.

The Saltine Warrior, an Indian figure named Big Chief Bill Orange, was born in a hoax published in The Syracuse Orange Peel, October 1931. The remains of this 16th century Onondagan chief were supposedly found in the excavations near Steele Hall, the relocation site for the women's gymnasium in 1928.

Syracuse did not begin using the Saltine Warrior until 41 years after they began calling themselves the Orangemen, which again, was derived when the school changed it’s official colors from rose and green to orange in 1890.
