Westchester is not a bad team, youâve got to remember they are a private school playing in a low classification and they donât ârecruitâ like other schools do. They are truly academics first.
Jay Canty is a nice player for Ragsdale. He could have done better than a High Point commitment (but it still is only a verbal until next fall). Gaudio wants Bello badly and has made no secret about it.

A couple of former teammates, Jay Canty and Deuce Bello, faced each other for the opening tap on Monday night.
They traded taps for dunks in this entertaining basketball game, but Canty and Ragsdale pulled away for an 87-66 victory over Westchester Country Day School as part of the Josh Howard Foundation/N.C. Scholastic Classic at the Greensboro Coliseum.
âEverybody knew we were going to go at it,â Bello said about Canty, his friend and former teammate at both Jamestown Middle School and briefly at Ragsdale. âI just tried to go at him hard, the same way he was going at me.â
Bello, the Wildcatsâ athletic sophomore guard, poured in 25 points with five dunks and two 3-pointers. But Canty, with 22 points and four dunks, had much more help during the Tigersâ easy nonconference victory.
Sophomore center Tyquan Roberts led Ragsdale (16-1) with 25 points and three 3-pointers, while senior guard Wally Jones added 16 points and two 3-pointers. Playing the final game of five contests at the seventh annual event, the Tigers jumped ahead 16-3 and never trailed.
In handing Westchester (16-1) its first loss, Ragsdale led by as many as 32 points (76-44) late in the third quarter. Guard Ike Nwamu added 18 points for Westchester, while forward Georg Wolff contributed eight.
âI knew coming here that this could happen,â said Westchester coach Pat Kahny. â(Ragsdale) is a very talented team. I thought we had to play over our heads to try and keep it close.â
The Tigers used their edge in size and athleticism to play an up-and-down game. Kahny wanted his team to run at the right times, but was disappointed when the Wildcats failed to play good half-court offense.
âWe got caught up in the tempo (Ragsdale) was playing and just decided to let it fly,â Kahny said.
Canty and Bello were freshman teammates at Ragsdale two years ago. Then Bello left for Westchester, where he reclassified and played as a freshman again last season.
âI have no clue why Deuce is at Westchester, but I wish we would have kept him,â said Roberts.
Although the outcome had been decided, Bello displayed his talent with 11 points in barely three minutes early in the fourth quarter. He had three dunks during that stretch, including a windmill jam.
âDeuce, heâs something else,â said Canty, a junior who has committed to High Point University. âMe and Deuce are really good friends and we talk a lot, but I really donât ask him too much about (leaving Ragsdale).â
According to Bello, who already has scholarship offers from several NCAA Division I colleges, the decision to transfer was primarily academics.
âI had to straighten that up,â he said. âAnd I also thought it would be a better opportunity for me at Westchester. Iâm really happy here.â
Westchester plays host to Caldwell tonight, then has homecoming on Friday. Ragsdale plays Southeast Guilford at home on Friday.[/QUOTE]
