Radio Station

What radio station do we play on in the Charlotte area? Is it FM or AM?

1660 AM

For some of you old school Niners. I know Matt Sweirad has called our games for a few years on WFNZ but who was the voice of Charlotte basketball in the past? What stations were games carried on?

610 WAYS AM broadcast the games in the 70s with John Kilgo and Jay Thomas, later Kilgo and Pete Brennan. The Wissel/Mullins era featured Jim Forest as the voice of the 49ers on 106.5 FM. Dave Jagler followed as the announcer with games on WFNZ before Matt.

“Big” WAYS was much stronger than 610 and 1660 combined, or so it seemed. If it was also “610”, has 610 lost some signal strength?

Thanks for the info

I've never even listened to "Big" WAYS but I bet you are right. I never can get 1660 to come in clear, even in Charlotte. It stinks. I'm glad we have a home on the radio, but I sure wish we had a better one.

Gary Williams (WFNZ), Henry Williams, and Lane Odom have done color. Cornbread did one or two TV games a few years ago.

Michele Tafoya (aka:Mickey Conley) did color for us one year (mid-90s) as well.

Over40, I agree that when 610AM (Big WAYS) was owned by Stan and Sis Kaplan, the signal was stronger. Of course, when we were on 106.5FM (then a beach music station - YUCK!), that was great! Too bad we couldn’t have kept that arrangement when the latter was taken over by Clear Channel.

It was nice in the pre-internet and TV news scrolling days to be able to listen to the 49ers on 106.5 up my way.

Matt does all right. I really liked Gary Williams though and do listen to his sports show on my drive to work every morning.

Matt does okay, he’s just hard to follow sometimes. I think the game is just too fast for him - he’s too used to a slower sport (baseball). Plus it’s hard to follow somebody like Jags.

I like Matt a lot. I loved when he was freakin’ out during the GW tournament game last year…
“Where’s the foul, ref? WHERE’S THE FOUL?” He was losing it. It was great.

1660 is what it is…a barren wasteland of radio space. But given the Charlotte media market, there are not many options. I understand this.

I also understand why during the mornings, they (WFNZ/WFNA) broadcast the same show on both channels.

And…sure, Jim Celania appeared to be pretty good friends with Benny Parsons, so it makes sense that his passing was a significant part of today’s show.

BUT WHAT I DON’T GET is we pay money (right?) to broadcast on their network, the topic of their show is sports…there is a sporting event in Charlotte TONIGHT, as well as it will be broadcast on their network…but there wasn’t even a casual (or joking) reference to the game when I listened this morning (approximately 30 minutes & I also listened to Jay Bilas).

Personally, I think the school could get better value if they used this to broadcast 49ers games.

ETA: my 2 cents on Matt. Sure, he’s no Dave Jageler. But I think Matt has improved significantly during his time as 49ers play by play man.

That’s true… If we pay for the air time, we ought to be getting free mentions on air when we have home and away games… frequently.
