Slightly worried about RB situation, but this league is weighted towards WRs (1pt per reception, plus usual yardate/TD points), so maybe I’ll be okay:
QB
Byron Leftwich JAC
Drew Bledsoe BUF
RB
Chris Brown TEN
Jamal Lewis BAL
Musa Smith BAL
Ron Dayne NYG
T.J. Duckett ATL
WR
Andre Johnson HOU
Deion Branch NWE
Justin Gage CHI
Lee Evans BUF
Muhsin Muhammad CAR
Peerless Price ATL
Reggie Williams JAC
Torry Holt STL
K Jay Feely ATL
Def/ST Minnesota Vikings MIN
One of the guys at the draft last night said he went to school with a guy who’s now a trainer for the Panthers. Supposedly, the guy said Stephen Davis is in the best shape of his life and will be a beast this year…
I’m with MK on the QB situation. As big of a Bills fan as I am, I have to admit that the offense is looking really anemic again. I think defense will keep them in virtually every game but I don’t see the Bills scoring more than 17 points or so. Bledsoe was horrific last year (offensive line didn’t help) and not sure he’ll bounce back. Adding Evans at least take a little pressure off Moulds and it gives Bledsoe a deep field threat. Question is, will he have the time needed to find his receivers?
Leftwich could have a good season…he’s a sleeper in my opinion but you just never know. Jaguars should be pretty good so you might want to consider starting him over Bledsoe, depending on the matchups.
Smart move picking up Musa but in my opinion, Jamal will play every game…it will work out I think. Don’t believe the Ron Dayne preseason hype either. Nothing wrong with picking him up late (as I’m assuming you did) but Ron Dayne will resort back to his normal sorry self during the regular season. Duckett will give you decent production but he’s a #2 RB at best. Might actually have a nice pick in Brown. With George gone, Brown could be set for a promising season.
If I were you, I’d at least consider trading a WR straight up for a RB or maybe work a combo deal (WR/Bledsoe) for a much better QB. Just don’t part with Holt/Price. Johnson/Muhammed could be some good trade bait for you to use to your advantage. I’d like to think that offering up Bledsoe/Muhammed could land you a really nice QB from someone who’s deeper at that position than you.
Your kicker is solid. Defense is “iffy”. Minnesotat could have a good year on defense but I still find them to be a bit porous.
And by the way, I respectfully disagree about Stephen Davis. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a starting RB in the world of fantasy. However, I think the Panthers are going to throw a lot more this year and Foster is going to get most goal line carries. Those two things force me to drop Davis down a little in my rankings. In my opinion, I’m expecting better options to be available, even in the middle-late part of the 2nd round of our draft.
I had Bledsoe last year, I just have a hunch he’ll return to previous form and be solid. If not, hopefully the hype about Leftwich will come through.
Yeah, Dayne was a mid round (8th or 9th round out of 17) pick, so no worries there. Who knows what he’ll do.
As for Davis, someone else there (a kid who went to W. charlotte for a few years) said he was at some mini-camp earlier this year where Fox said that he’d use Foster for the majority of the first half of the season, then switch to Davis. But who knows until the season starts.
I had Bledsoe last year as well. I probably won’t draft him this year unless he’s around late, when I need my 2nd QB. It’s not so much him, as it is that offense. I think it will improve a little this year under Mularkey because I think they’ll open up the field more. But that offensive line is suspect and it’s hard for Drew to put up good numbers when he’s on his back.
Hey, no one more than me hopes I’m wrong. I’d love to see him have a Pro Bowl year but I’m a little skeptical at the moment.
Our draft is this Saturday. Looking forward to seeing how things play out with so many injuries, players going to new teams, good rookies, etc. Should be an interesting fantasy season.
you said this was a draft? what position did you draft in? how many total teams (by the looks I’ld hope it was 12 or 14)? how many starters? and outside of Lewis, Holt, then I assume Brown… what was the rest of your order?
with 1pt/rec… rb’s are still where its at (like in any FFL)… but heavily weighted towards the passcatching RB’s. Barber, Faulk, LT, Holmes, Westbrook, Dunn, etc.
Despite what these other guys say… QB is not your biggest weakness. You can relatively easily overcome not having a topflight QB if you have 2-3 servicable ones and play matchups each week. Bledsoe (hopefully a median of last season and the one before) and Leftwich should be fine. If there are any decent (ie, non-Rivers, non-Brees) QB’s left on the WW/FA pool, I’ld drop Evans and pick him up so you have more matchups to work with.
You are desperately hurting for a 3rd RB. Lewis is solid (and imo won’t have any legal problems), and while Brown has shot up the draft charts since preseason… he’s still a rookie. Dayne/Duckett are no good for this scoring, especially when they are the 2nd back in each of their offenses, and you’re other backup, will only see the turf if Lewis has legal issues… but if you thought that was the case, you wouldn’t have drafted him anyway.

This isn’t always true. I had a VERY solid team last year but had Drew Bledsoe, Maddox and Harrington as my QB’s. Don’t even think I drafted a QB until around the 7th round actually. Bledsoe was “servicable” and I definitely played the matchups each week. I lost 4 games last year by a margin of 10 points or less. In those games, my QB position killed me. I do agree that you can be successful without having a Culpepper, Manning or Vick. However, speaking from experience (and probably a lot of bad luck), it certainly helps to have a consistent QB who isn’t on an anemic offense. Just a little incentive on those days that one of your RB’s/WR’s has an off day.
Pretty pleased with the way my draft went this weekend. Wound up with:
Trent Green
Drew Bledsoe
Carson Palmer (Alternate #1)
Clinton Portis
Cory Dillon
Quentin Griffin
Curtis Martin
Randy Moss
Eric Moulds
Larry Fitzgerald
Reggie Wayne
Kevin Johnson (Alternate #2)
Billy Miller
Antonio Gates
Longwell
Brien
Kansas City (we include special teams)
Tennessee
Stole Portis at #9 in the first round thanks to two guys going QB (Culpepper/Vick) and someone taking Jamal Lewis. Our league scores RB’s and WR’s the same but we get bonuses for big plays. Hoping that and the new rule changes will help me get some solid numbers from Moss. We start 1xQB, 2xRB, 2xWR, 1xTE, 1xK, 1xD/ST. Too bad it’s not a keeper league because I feel pretty good about the future of Fitzgerald and Griffin.
Thanks. Had NO idea I’d end up with Portis. Picking 9th out of 10 teams, I had pretty much decided I would get Moss and then pick up one of the following (Domanick Davis, Dillon, Taylor, R. Johnson or E. James) with the 12th pick. I just assumed Portis would go in the top 8 for sure. This is the 3rd straight year I’ve had Portis in a non-keeper league so I feel like it was meant to be…lol.
I just need my team to stay healthy. Had several injuries to cope with last year and that hurt me.
jcl - totally correct in having a true stud qb to lineup each week is easier and more reliable, but imo it doesn’t justify the cost of that stud qb (cpep/manning). As you mentioned two people above you in the draft passed up Portis for a QB. IMO thats a bad tradeoff.
As for your team… looks very solid. should be a shoe-in for a deep run in the playoffs assuming NE uses Dillon. great draft.
Yep…we reseed. Unconventional but it’s something we’ve always done and it makes draft day very interesting. With that said, I didn’t pick util the 8th spot in the 3rd round and still got Dillon. There were several people in our league that were buying into the “NE is a throwing offense” while I took the “that’s because they haven’t had a RB like Dillon to hand off too” approach.
I was worried I wouldn’t get Moss since the guy after me had back-to-back but when Culpepper got snagged, he knew he couldn’t get the QB/WR combo so he went RB and RB. Left Moss for me and then Dillon was a gift at #28.
Nice Draft JCL… Had mine last night (10 team), but I didn’t have the good fortune of any of the stud backs dropping to 8.

Whats your starting format? if its 1/2/2/k/def, you should have this in the bag. If you have to start 3wr, you are still in great shape and I’ld look to trade some rb depth (minor+williams before the start of the season, or possibly kjones after the start) for a better wr3. Was it barlow or rudi who fell to 3.08?!?! thats insane, you’re league mates should have their head examined.
Barlow was at 3.08, I was a little surprised. We have had the same group for a few years, they all know what they are doing.
It is a 1/2/3/k/d league… I’m already working on one team who has 5 solid WR’s but is thin at RB (I screwed him by taking Steven Jackson, he has Faulk), I will see what I can do.
Hopefully Fitzgerald pulls a Boldin of last year and I won’t need to worry about it.
