recruits

i may have started a similar thread already but i was just wondering if anybody had heard about any new recruits. i know we are recruiting powell(hopefully the coaching staff doesnt offer him) but since there isnt much talk on the board i thought id post. plus im worried about our recruiting. with the two remaining scholarships id like to see us go after any of the following:
center-could be a juco guy who is developed who can help develop phil and can give him a rest and give us height. a chris nance type wouldnt be bad but preferably someone taller with more offensive game.
a charlie coley clone-i dont care if he is a juco i want lutz to make a regular occurance of recruiting guys like this. even if his offensive game isnt great someone who is long with great athletisism, defensive presence and heart.
top 100 recruit-if only it was this easy. i dont care what position he is just someone who can come in with the offer of immediate playing time and be a star. just no head cases.
those teammates from south carolina who were here for midnight madness sound like they could be just what we need. we need to jump on them early. if i started a thread like this before dont jump down my throat im just trying to get the board talking right now as it is pretty slow.

recruit my brother.

recruit my brother.

How tall is he?

6’8 and growing.

6'8 and growing.

Sounds like a freak!

it would be a dream come true.

I guess I’ll ask the obvious questions. Where does he play? What year is he? Can he play?

Nathan Bowers - lake norman high

center naturally concidering 6’8 is huge in highschool. This year he’s been getting a little more time at forward because a guy thats good in the forward and center positions moved up to varsity - Strong defensively inside and on perimeter, and he can take a 3 when need be. Nice double hand jam too.

Pulls off a lot of double doubles, generally 3-5 blocks per game. Good freethrow shooter. As for his points per game it ranges dependent on how many minutes he gets. Dont get me wrong, he starts every game, and refs allowing, plays a majority. But in highschool ball they tend to foul big kids just to “even the playing field a bit” - a coach thats recruiting him even admitted to that - and thus far this season they’ve definately been rough. He’s season high thus far was 19. Another factor is the fact that his team has been crushing a majority of their opponents by upwards of 20-30 points per game, so the 4th quarter is a lot of “scrub” play.

Hasnt popped up on scout or rivals, but didnt really come out of his shell until last season, and especially this season. He attended a few clinics in the offseason last year where some d1, 2 and 3 scouts showed up. The coach that ran one of them was quoted with…

"I really liked this kid. He is long, has 3 point
range and is not bad off the dribble. He reminds me of a young Mike Miller (Memphis Grizzlies) granted not that level
of talent but the potential to be the same type of player. I feel he has a serious chance to be a low to mid major
player if he continues to develop his perimeter game. Has quick feet and moves laterally very well. Keeps his hands
up when he is moving which you just don’t see that often with kids his size. He is quick enough to guard smaller
players. I would envision him causing all kinds of problems on the top of a 3-2 taking away 3’s and trapping with that
wing span and quickness. Was the only player in camp who really could guard Keys. Needs more weight, and more
time in the weight room but definitely a kid to monitor. "

so theres the good and the bad from an unbiased opinion. He’s been spending a lot of time in the weight room over the summer and continues to do so today. He’s also been on a weight gain program.

kids got lots of heart and gets really psyched about coming to games with me.

Good to have a brother that can possibly play in college. It’s a fun time for you.
What year is he? Is he still growing? Does he have good grades? Would he walk on at Charlotte?
The key to fringe players are the intangibles. Is he a team player? Will he work his nuts off? Will he complain to the coaching staff and players if he doesn’t get playing time. Is he a good kid off the court? Does he have great grades.
If he has all of the intangibles then he has a good chance if he is a decent player.

 • He’s a Senior

 • I assume he’s still growing - he eats like a horse and drinks a full glass of milk before bed everynight (and when i say glass of milk im talking about one of our very own Charlotte 49er cups that they give us at teh game, so as you know its quite big)

 • Grades wise, well he’s been accepted to Charlotte already. He does have a solid GPA and is taking AP courses. He knows that good grades are expected, and he has a personal appreciation for that.

 • He said he would walk on at Charlotte, but naturally he would prefer to go somewhere on scholarship and/or be guaranteed to play on the team - but the team has to have a good academic program as well

 • He is definately a team player - he’s one of the teams co-captains this year and does a lot during the game to try to get his team fired up. Cheers for the other players when hes on the bench. Always first one to give the freethrow shooter a five after missed/made freethrow.

 • He works hard. He’s spent multiple afternoons after practice with the coach working on technique and shooting. He very rarely goes a day without either practicing or going to the YMCA to play pickup games and lift.

 • As far as PT this kid has had a history of getting the PT shaft. Until the summer before his Jr. year he never had a good coach. As a young player he played AAU ball under a coach who was also the coach at a rival school across town. Included on the squad was a group of kids who the coach planned to move straight up to varsity when they got there as freshmen, so naturally he played them constantly and my brother would ride the bench. He then hit highschool, got a bit of time on the JV squad, then was moved up to varsity as a soph. As a soph he rode the bench because his coach basketball illiterate. If you looked up the highschools history in basketball, they’re record under him is pathetic - and its my understanding that the record remains the same today. We moved, causing him naturally to transfer schools, where he started every game as a Jr (with the exception of sr. night for obvious reasons) - and he has started every game since (and the team doesnt suck - a little more than week ago they were sitting 17th in the Charlotte pool of highschools which takes into account all of the schools in teh area, from 2a-4a as well as private). On a side note, the second AAU team he played for (under a different coach than the one before) the summer before jr year. He was on a team with Steph. Currys little brother seth and a couple of other guys who have been recruited to smaller schools around the area already. The coach moved to coach at a HS in another state so naturally the team dispursed.

The point of all of that is that the kid has been given the playing time shaft his entire life. Until halfway through his highschool career he had never had a real coach - but everyone who watched him play in the few minutes he got knew he had a ton of potential. He worked hard throughout the lack of playing time, and never complained. His motto throughout it all was along the lines of working harder to get the time - even though my parents and I could see what was going on behind the scenes. This is also the contributing factor to why he hasnt appeared on any of the scouting websites as of now - because he never got the in game experience to develop his game.

 • As for off the court the kid has never had problems making friends, has never been in any sort of trouble, and gets along with anyone. He also recieved a NC Good Sportsmanship award after last years basketball season that was voted upon by all of the refs and coaches that had been to his games.

Sign him Bobby!!!

How skinny is he? He’s not like a Phaler is he? More like a Garnett. He can hit the pull up top of the key ‘J’. But still would want a bigger guy that can’t be pushed around. We should buy Shaq/Garnett/D. Howard/Kobe/Nash/ sperm and create a monster squad in 19 years. (maybe crazy enough to work)

Why can’t we get 7’0"+ guys??? Are they going extinct? I think we should ALWAYS have one on our team. There has to be one laying around some where. Davidson seems to get a lot of foreign players. Anyone know if we recruit hard in other countries.

its a good thing we don’t have a recruiting forum

Yes, it is interesting to see 3 threads on recruiting on page 1 of this forum and we’re “beating a dead horse” in one of them!

Hmmm…

garnette skinny - he’s been working on putting on weight, and its begun working, unlike phaler who will forever weigh 100lbs.

I think the probelm with the 7 footers is a lack of movement. i think its just hard to find one that knows how to move, can move, and hasnt had any problems with their knees. thats just speculation though

If he is a good hardworking selfless kid…selfless being key with having a good off the court attitude while having good grades then he might have a chance. But, for coaches to take walk-ons they HAVE to have good grades to help the team GPA, and now with graduation rates being so important it’s imperative that he stays and graduates if he came here as a walk-on.
Is he very athletic? If he is athletic like say Ian then I think he he might have a chance…if he was overly athletic then he would already be getting recruited by other schools.

but if he is even a low to mid major player and we got him as a walk on that would be huge. to add a 6’8" and growing kid without using a scholarship is something very few programs get.

If by athleticism your defining the ability to get up and down the court, drag with players, jump, and overall muscle mass then… He is good getting up and down the court, doesnt lag behind at all - basically running with the pack up the court. Defensively he can guard up top, he has multiple times, and his size creates problems with the outside shooters. He also has the ability to race down the court one on one when someones on a break away, and if he doesnt beat them there he make his presence felt in one way or another scaring the shooter. For his jumping, I have no idea how high he can jump, but he dunks with ease, and goes up strong with both hands on layups putting it right next to the rim. He also has enough verticle that he doesnt have a problem blocking guys on both in and outside the paint. As for his overall muscle mass, he, like my father (who is 6’9) has very long muscles, so they dont bulge like a lot of players. He in no way looks like phaler though, and is a strong player from my personal experience with him as well as watching him play, he isnt someone to play lightly. He has on multiple occasions intercepted balls being passed throughout mid court as well.

If you are asking about something I missed then let me know.

Grades wise he’s a smart kid. He also has already been accepted to Charlotte, and says thats where he wants to go if he isnt playing ball somewhere else. So staying around and graduating isnt a problem.

Tonight the kid had a great game in the first game of their christmas tournament. Put up 24 points from the 4/5 positions. Shot 6 for 6 from the line. Two strong double handed jams, the first of which helped cause a real momentum shift in the first quarter. Shots were made both from under the basket as well as outside outside of the lane. Rebounds were solid, not sure how many he had, but its reasonable to assume he was in the double digits. Layed out on the floor after the ball multiple times tonight, one of which essentially saved the game for the team. Close win 59-57.

Also pray for one of the players on the opposing team. He hit the wall behind the basket (outside of the padding) head first, passed out and started siezing. He was taken to the hospital via stretcher. He seemed to be moving his arms and talking with the trainers/EMTs, but it seems that it was either a spinal or head trama injury. Im not sure what the players name was, but he played for the North Iredell Red Raiders. Please keep he and his family in your prayers.
