Richmond Post Game

I want to take the opportunity of a home win to point out that once again, the refs tried to take a game from us. We were up 11 with 2:30 or so to play and the refs did everything they could to give Richmond that game. Richmond scored 18 pts in 2.5 minutes and the number of BS touch fouls called was ridiculous. This isn’t about Richmond though, it’s about the officiating in Halton arena for Niner home games. I do not know why, but our games are called like we’re the away team, and that has to stop.

Richmond has good players at the 1-3, but their bigs are not very big or very good. We scored 50 pts in the paint once we figured out that we need to attack them. Williams is big but is a fouling machine. Martel is seriously disappointing. I thought he’d be better by now. Duinker started off strong then disappeared. Garret isnt that big and he shoots FTs poorly, so he is an offensive liability.

We almost won this one without hitting a single 3 pt shot. Deuce hit one late.

JB banged away like a 4. He played really really well.

I do not understand why Chris Braswell brings the ball down low before shooting. Every layup is like that. Is that coached? Why? He played well, but he could have scored 20.

Two guys who played better than their statlines: EVic and DG. DG catches so much grief, but without even looking how he shot the ball (I think he had 4 pts?) he made some really nice passes, blocked a shot, I think had a steal, and played well both on and off the ball, in general. I really liked how he attacked the basket, even if he did get knocked to the floor. He got right back up.

That was more than I intended to write. I am just sick of the officiating. It ruined an otherwise fun game. Tim Higgins was on the floor, IIRC, but I didnt know the other 2.

Bonus - there was a nice frequency of hot blondes in the first few rows of section 122.

Tim Higgins blows goats, of that we can be sure, but some of those touch fouls were our fault because we even gave the referee(s) a chance to freakin’ call them. That one in the backcourt with less than 20 secs left had me screaming into a pillow.

That said, great win. Feels good to finally beat Richmond at home, and to finally see the offense run from the outside looking in. Nickerson and T-Will had solid games. Some people were pointing out on Twitter earlier that Braswell looks like he’s trying to draw a foul every time by starting low and then getting hit as he goes up, but the refs seem to be wise to it. He just looks like a complete wuss when he keeps doing that crap.

1-0 in the A-10. I’ll take it.

I’m glad that we were able to hang on despite the poor officiating. Also nice to bounceback at home against a team that is usually near the top of the A10 every year (at least it feels like). This win is another step in the right direction.

We didn’t even make a 3 until like 5 min left. If you would of said we only made 1 three pointer… i woulda thought we scored in the 50s and lost by 15. The guys played smart and obviously STUCK TO THE GAME PLAN!

Good game for JB and Coach Major. The team played well over all and as a team.

The ref sucked for both teams. I was under the basket on the visitors side and during the first half, the ref didn’t call at least 3 hacks we made on Richmond… i mean you could hear them. That old ref is prob past his prime.

Shooting < 60% from FT annoys the hell out of me. I noticed Mayfield sat the bench for most of the 2nd half, he was def off his game.

All it takes is taking good shots and MAKING THEM. Our shots fell tonight. Too bad they didnt the last few games.

1-0 in conf play.

When’s the last time we took only 6 3s in a game? crazy. JB and Green only 1 attempt each? Major must have said he would kick their ass if anyone missed more than 1.

T Will is gonna be good. It’s sad when he bangs harder for rebounds then Braswell and Sherrill

Tim Higgins? Enough said. St Johns-Rutgers. Big East tourney last year. That is all you need to know.
Tim Higgins? Enough said. St Johns-Rutgers. Big East tourney last year. That is all you need to know.
Apparently there is no mandatory retirement age for college refs. Higgons reminds me of Andy Rooney on his last broadcast.

We looked like 2 different teams. The bad team the first 15 minutes, and then the good team played the last 25 minutes. We exhibited more teamwork than I have seen all season, we broke their press when they pressed.

I thought Green had his best game of the season. My biggest concern is that free throw shooting will cost us some games like this.

Simply put, we had a gameplan! Coaching staff was aware when Garrett was away from the rim and it allowed JB to post up and take advantage. Never thought we would have 6 3PTA. Can anyone check that - record low?? Especially since the 3 is what this program has been built on in the last 10+ years; to go completely away from it speaks volumes to the coaching staff and the team’s patience. Braz didn’t shoot a 3 and stuck around the post. I think the coaches really got into the players’ ears after Memphis.

I don’t think the refs were close to losing us that game regardless of the bad calls. Bottom line, if we can’t make free throws then the new blue print for all A10 teams will be to foul in the last 4 minutes. If Richmond would’ve kept fouling when they got within 4 and 2 then we would’ve lost. Instead they backed off and allowed us to milk the clock for a half a minute or so.

I always enjoy a good win, but we won’t see many this year with this kind of ft shooting. It is hard enough for us to win games if we shoot 70% from the line.

Braswell - 3 rebounds (0 offensive) - 28 min.
Sherrill - 1 rebound (0 offensive) - 12 min

Briscoe - 5 rebounds (3 offensive) - 22 min
T Will - 4 rebounds (1 offensive) - 15 min
Henry - 5 rebounds (1 offensive) - 30 min
JB - 5 rebounds (2 offensive) - 35 min

We need Braswell and Sherrill banging harder inside.

Before the next game, he needs to say he’ll kick their ass if they miss more than one free throw. You know it’s bad when you shoot 53% from the field and only 57% from the gimme line.

There were roughly 20 fouls called in the first 37 minutes of play and 20 fouls called in the last 3 minutes of play.

"The teams traded baskets over the next nine minutes, and Charlotte matched its biggest lead of the second half, 52-48, when Jamr Briscoe connected on the team’s first trifecta of the night with 7:12 remaining. Barnett also got in on the action, as he and Briscoe accounted for 15 of Charlotte’s 17 points over an eight-minute stretch to give the Niners a 62-51 lead with 2:37 left."

Aside from the foul shooting and silly fouls at the end, the team played pretty well overall. Richmond isn’t great this year, but they’re not terrible. Thought a lot of guys contributed in this win:

Green sparked that comeback to close the half. Not his best 2nd half, but he got it going for a little bit there. Hope to see more of that, because you can tell how good the team can be if he can create.

Barnett carried the team, made huge rebounds, played decent D (albeit against mediocre post players). Fun to think about his career up to this point, one of the success stories in terms of player development.

Sherrill had a better game tonight. He seems to be improving as the year goes along, though it’s tough to tell with the competition level varying so wildly.

Williams and Nickerson continue to show flashes of potential, but not quite there yet.

Henry was his typical self, enjoyed his breakaway dunk. Briscoe hit some really smooth jumpers and hit the only 3 of the night.

Braswell had on ok game. Would like to see him use a pump fake more often against guys like Garrett.

Mayfield had an off shooting night. Contributed in other ways, but would be nice to see him shoot better (guessing it’s probably a psychological thing at this point).

As on off-topic, why do we often not have boxscores available on espn.com during the game? Other A10 teams usually have one. This time I couldn’t find live stats anywhere.

Man Mayfield’s offense is TERRIBLE.

We sure don’t make a win look good do we …

A win over Richmond in Halton? I’ll take it, I hate those guys.

THIS.
When is the last time you have seen a Niner team get their points inside. I kept looking at the three point tracker over the tunnel and just grinning. Was great to see that inside game and understanding Richmond’s weakness (Weak Bigs). Good to start off 1-0…
St. Joes on the road will be tough…

We played an OK game. Started off very lethargic, then ended the 1st half on a great run that was keyed by more energetic defense.

We still have some issues with shooting and finishing games, but this was much needed.

Not only did we shoot 6 threes, but our opponent shot 29, almost 5 X more than us. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before.

Good job guys! Very impressed with Barnett and Henry in this game.

Glad to see us holding off a late run and getting the W. 1-0 in the conference, i’ll take it. JB was pretty unstoppable tonight
