Rodney Update

Before Rodney White, the last significant free agent still unemployed, spent Labor Day weekend (five days total) in D.C.'s infamous Heartbreak Hotel for carrying his licensed Colorado handgun in a car (strictly illegal in Washington) while driving around with friends, he was being romanced by the Nuggets (offering $2.4 million), the Knicks ($1 million) and the Celtics ($1 million). The case probably will be bargained down to a misdemeanor tomorrow, with no jail time or community service. When that happens, Denver is expected to re-sign its compulsive scorer … for decidedly less than originally offered.

NY Post

If the Nuggs were offering $2.4 mill before, you can bet they won’t be offering much more than the other teams mentioned now that this has occurred. Rodney appears to have made at least a million dollar mistake. Hopefully, hitting him in the wallet will hit home.

Denver Post 10/4

Vandeweghe guessed free agent Rodney White will see the felony gun charge he faces in Washington, D.C., reduced. Denver still hopes to re-sign the small forward. “From what I understand it’s going to end up some type of misdemeanor, so it shouldn’t be much of an issue,” Vandeweghe said. He also said the Nuggets probably would wrap up the contract of free-agent swingman Greg Buckner today

If he resigns with Denver, he will probably be out of the NBA in about 2-3 years.
Why would he want to resign with them(other than money and the only offer now). He should of jump at the 2 other lower offers for they would of gave him a better chance for the future(playing time and money).

He can take over at the 2 for Vashon Leonard. He plays worse defense than Rodney and is much older.

Jon Barry is no longer on the Nuggets, he got around 20 minutes a game which will be open to Rodney now. Also the GM likes Rodney a lot but the coach doesn't. And all signs are that the coach will be gone after this season(they wanted to fire him but they made the playoffs so he gets to stick around for another year till his contract is us). There are player/coach issues there and apparently the powers that be are on the players side of this one. So when a new coach is brought in(assuming the Nuggets don't go on a miricle NBA Finals run or something), Rodney will probably see more PT, maybe even start in 05-06 as Veshon Lenard continues to age.

Also on cnnsi.com there is a little mention of Rodney, saying he will resign with the Nuggets, possibly as early as today. can’t find the link, it was in the “todays rumors/truths” page.

They hired Michael Cooper as an assistant at the end of last season. He is rumored to be the one to slide into Bzdelik’s position if he falters. Cooper should help with the player’s this year.

I still think he should sign with the Celtics.

it seems like all other teams besides Denver have backed off their offers after the arrest.

Denver is actually shaping up to be a very good opportunity for Rodney to get serious PT this year. If(probably more like when) he re-signs he will be the ONLY backup a the SG AND SF spots. Right now they’ve got Melo and Lendard to start at those to spots but no one to back up either. Yes, they will almost certainly bring in another backup at those positions, but resigning Rodney seems to be more important to them and it looks as though he will be the primary backup at those two spots this year, where as last year Jon Barry was the #1 bench guy there. Assuming they don’t sign a big name(not that there are really any out there…) to be a backup, I’d expect to see Rodney get 20 mpg off the bench. If he keeps up his career ppm marks he’ll be over 10 points a game and be looking good to grab the starting SG or SF spot(whichever Melo isn’t going to be playing) in a year or two.

No one was ready to give him a starting spot this year(unless some injury forced him to), so anywhere he could go and be one of the primary backups is a good fit for him right now. He will put up good numbers and catch some eyes, all that is stopping him from being a starter in the NBA is his D, I think being the 6th or 7th man on a good team will work out well for him.

They only have about 2.4 million to play with and are signing Greg Buckner and most likely Rodney. There will be no big names brought in at the 2 or 3. They've got Camby, Nene and Kmart in the frontcourt, though.
The free-agent swingman is expected to sign a two-year, $3.8 million contract with the Denver Nuggets today, with the Nuggets holding an option on the second year, and then take part in the first day of training camp.

Update

Looks like Rodney will have 2 years to grow up in Denver. He will get increased minutes this year since he is really the only scorer off of the bench and J. Barry is gone. I can see Lenard wearing down a little during the year and Rodney getting the start.

So he’ll make 1.8 million this year, down from 1.95 last year. He really got lucky with this one, assuming his gun charges are reduced to something less than a felony. If he’s charged with the felony, the contract is void.

Also, apparently the gun is licensed in Colorado but he didn’t have the Washington DC permit. I haven’t heard much more about the gunfire part of it.

It cost him in the second year, so if he plays well this year he can’t go out and get a big payday, nuggets have him locked down at a low salary for year 2. If he doesn’t play well they don’t have to pick up his second year.

I am still suprised they signed him, they must plan on playing him a lot more this year because the season is long if they don’t plan on playing him he is not going to be happy mid way thru the year. I would suspect they plan on playing him a lot this year, especially if his shot is falling.

Who is their starting 2 guard ?

Veshon Lendard, a 3 point specialist. As of now Rodney is the only backup for him and for Melo at SF. Looking good for a bunch of minutes for Rodney.

Yeah, the NRA. :fastgun:

Rodney resigns with the Nuggets, 2 years for $3.8 million. Be glad you got a second chance, my friend, most of us would’ve never gotten the opportunity.

Jail time changes White’s approach, Denver Post

I guess I’d like to see him play and play well, but I seriously doubt the Charlotte 49ers will be giving the former Niner much ink in media guides. Look for the program to separate from him a bit after this incident, in my opinion. Of course, he separated from us after 1 season, so I really don’t think we should be touting him much anyway.

After jawing with the Nuggets' Kenyon Martin last spring while Martin played for New Jersey, New York forward Tim Thomas told The New York Post on Monday that he wants to take their dispute to the boxing ring.

“Enough talk,” Thomas said. “I’m not looking forward to fighting Kenyon on the court, throw one punch, the rest of the teammates are around. I’m looking forward to somebody promoting it, gloves on. So everybody can see what’s going to happen.”

“I don’t have time for kids, man,” Martin said. “I have kids at home.”

Best part of the article. What a loon Tim Thomas is. He would literally die.
