Ryan Odom named Lenoir-Rhyne HC

Ex-Charlotte 49ers assistant Ryan Odom named basketball coach at Lenoir-Rhyne

Good for him!

Good Luck to Ryan Odom.

This is a remarkable interview here. Says he talked to the players prior to hire and sounds like he was making sure they were on board with him, prior to his acceptance. Re-recruiting present players. The other statement that sticks out is that he thinks that LR is the best place to start his coaching career. Sounds like he doesn’t expect to be there forever. BTW, he is replacing a very good coach in Lentz, who highly successful and stuck with the program when they severely cut back his scholarships in the 90’s. Not sure what the scholarship picture is like now, but I’m sure Odom wouldn’t have agreed to go there without some assurance that he could win early.

Goes to show you once again that it’s not what you know but indeed who you know.

Good for him.

Lentz committed a minor recruiting violation before stepping down. Had recruits on campus during the dead period. When the coaching staff found out about the violation they didn’t send the recruits home. They self reported it. Interesting to see what happens.

Lentz was at Pfieffer prior to LR. He was followed at Pfieffer by another coach who’s last started with an “L” but I can’t recall his exact name.

Thanks for the info on Lentz. I was trying to find the scoop today and couldn’t find anything. I figured that it their poor showing this year. At LR that’s usually not been the end of the world. But, now with the success of football maybe they had changed their expectations. But recruiting violations…he has been around long enough to know that game.

Pheiffer? Oh yeah, forgot Lentz coaching there. I thought it was the ending of their names that was similar.

I’m surprised Odom didn’t land a decent assistant gig somewhere. Perhaps he just wants to start his HC journey, best of luck to him.

i think Odom will make a decent head coach. I think he was in a no win situation taking over after Major’s leave here and trying to undo the previous mark left on all the players by Major.

This. I think too many here might be holding Ryan tooooo accountable for the mess he inherited from Major ((I know he was on Major’s staff too, but Major was the “leader”). It is hard to change very much during the middle of the season and see positive results.

I don’t know what you guys saw, but his in game coaching wasn’t very impressive to me.

Well he gets to be the one calling all the shots now so ull see.

It’s like 919R said, “It is hard to change very much during the middle of the season and see positive results.”

No win situation.

Good for Ryan. He wasn’t a great in-game coach for us, but I think it’s hard to take the situation he was thrown into and then extrapolate it to his potential or actual abilities. I wish him luck.

Yeah I am curious to see how he does. On one hand Odom seemed to have been doing a lot of the coaching in games even when Major was on the bench and we see how that worked out. The culture and mentality of the team though I think took it’s lead from Major and that includes how they practiced. Either way will be interesting to watch how he does.

This is great news for him! I really think he is a solid coach, just got caught up in a bad situation. I hope he does well. He put in a lot of solid hard work for us under a tough situation. We should all be pulling for him.

As HC here he didn’t really demonstrate good in-game coaching. However, a good system coach can hide in-game coaching flaws. No coach is perfect, now he gets a true chance to show what he can do.

good for him.

A fresh start for Odum. Good luck to him.

I wish him the best.

clt says this is interesting now
