Saint Louis postgame

No one ever started one, so here it is.

The Niners had way too many turnovers to beat a good team like SLU. Hopefully we are NIT bound and hopefully never schedule SLU again. They’ve been tormenting us for way too long (especially @ Saint Louis)

PH took a bad elbow near the end, hopefully he’ll be alright.

Our weaknesses all year were exposed…turnovers, bad shooting and missed free throws. Still, this is a good SLU team. Hit your free throws and make a few more shots and we’re right there. It will come. I feel like we’re headed for a 4 seed in the NIT…might get to return to Halton. Hope PH is OK. Proud of this team and where the program has come from. No matter how we got there, there are some great memories/wins to look back on from this year and 21-11 (8-8) looks pretty good for a scope of this year.

They were a better team today and beat us pretty good. Not much else to say about that.

I really hope there aren’t people who say fire major because we can’t shoot free throws in this thread considering how well we shot from the line yesterday.

Good season, Niners. Really would like to see us play in the NIT this year.

I don’t think we need to fire Major because of FT%, but this game does point to two things we have to be better at next year that Major should focus on improving as a team. FT% and turnovers killed us in this game and many games this season. Cut down the unforced turnovers and then up the FT% a few and we win two or 3 more games this season. Two easy areas to improve upon - part comes with coaching, part from practice and part from maturing. Nothing wrong with expecting improvement in these two areas next season in addition to improved shooting.

I wish TWill could shoot

I thought I’d be more upset, but I’m not. SLU was the better team, but we seemed to never give up - that I respect. The TOs / FTs were atrocious, and that’s def something we should work on. That said, I’ll take our 21 wins. It’s a 3rd year of improvement, and we were on the cusp of an at large bid. Hopefully next year we have 24 or 25 wins on this date. It’s when we plateau or start to decline, that’s when I’ll start to b*tch. But so far, year after year improvement. Good season fellas, it was fun. Thanks to the seniors and try and make some noise in the NIT! Go Niners!!

Hit the nail on the head. We are moving in the right direction BUT these must be addressed next year.
I am a little disappointed we didn’t compete more today but oh well. Looking forward to seeing us in the NIT for this year…NCAA next. (I hope)

He was an absolute joke today. If he wasn’t bricking shots, he was making dumb fouls or throwing the ball away or getting called for traveling. Impossible to watch…Some days, like yesterday, we see the good T-Will. Unfortunately, there were way too many of these T-Will days this season. When he’s off his game, he can single-handedly kill us.

Tandem that with Pierria’s complete disregard for driving to the hole today and we never had a chance. Our backcourt (Ingram was invisible) may as well have stayed home. They were all useless…We know our frontcourt’s our strength, but when Pierria isn’t aggressive to the bucket and creating timid turnovers, we’re doomed from the start.

I agree with what you’re saying. I expect a lot of improvement next year, especially with our guards. Hopefully Lester can come in and be a good shooter along with improved shooting from our current players. But P said in his interview after the richmond game that coach has them shoot FTs at the end of every practice, and that’s what helped him hit those at the end of the game yesterday. I just think it’s really hard to critisize Major for FT shooting. If posters want him to be a better coach in other areas then I’m okay with that (i.e. all the turnovers we had today). But blaming the coach for FT shooting never made sense to me.

Well it was partly validated by what Major said and that we aren’t in practice. We didn’t know how/if they practiced them and Major himself said that even after missing FTs in big games he wouldn’t change how they prepare for them because he didn’t want to make them bigger than they are. Similar to the post game interview where Major said he doesn’t like shooting a 3 as a piece of your offense, he said it is the by-product of the offense. You see that reflected in the players he coaches and the offensive sets we run.

Right. I guess his coaching style like you are referring to, along with the type of players he recruits is more of our shooting problems rather than “he can’t teach players how to shoot.” Also agree that we aren’t in practices with the team, but just noting that henry did say in the interview that FTs were practiced at the end of every practice. Although we aren’t at those practices so it’s hard to debate how much more they should practice shooting them, how much technique is being coached, etc.

p.s. - sorry for starting the thread derailment guys. fuck cody ellis and his blue hair! but evans was money today, gotta give credit where credit is due

Best season weve had since 04-05.

Hope we keep getting better.

Good thing is, we’re going back to the conference in which we had that great season.

You also have to take into consideration that we were pretty tired and SLU had fresh legs for this game. Wish we’d have won, but losing Henry, etc., and not hitting any jumpers makes it tough in a game like this. Solid season (better than most expected) and a good step forward, IMO.

clt is disappointed in the o’s coverage of Henry’s injury.

It’s already been said, FTs and TOs killed us. FTs are something a kid can work on before and after practice. We should get better on the TOs as our young guys get more PT. Has anyone else noticed some of our TOs are caused by the receiver and not the passer, especially outside the perimeter? We need to get better at continuing to come to the ball. Our players assume the ball will get to them even though a defender is riding them like a horse.

Willie. Please take two dribbles and a deep breath before shooting a FT. I’m begging you.

We are going back to the conference with the same name as the one in which we had that great season

SLU was just the better team, no question. The way they play defense is how I’d like to see the Niners play eventually, with guys using good spacing, stepping up appropriately when other guys get beat, but without sacrificing too many open shots, and moving their feet to stay in front of guys. The refs were allowing a lot of contact down low, which didn’t help our style of game. When that happens, you have to be able to kick it back out to an open guy to knock down the open jumper, and our guys just couldn’t hit that shot today (aside from Benkovic hitting a couple). I hope Ingram can get back to knocking those down, he was at least decent at that earlier in the year, seems to have struggled lately with his jumper. Williams was back to his weird shot / hope it goes in 3 pointers again, had really hoped he’d started to use his shorter jumper form on those shots. Needs to correct that for next year.

A couple other things I noticed:

  1. Henry’s assist to Benkovic on the wing on one play was especially sweet. He faked the pass to another guard (Ingram?), which drew the SLU player over, then acted like he was driving before passing out to a wide open Benkovic.
  2. Braswell played well today, 20 and 10 and really seemed to try to carry the team back in the 2nd half. I especially liked his quick spin left and layup that left his man standing the wrong direction.
  3. The game got out of hand during that one short stretch where the Niners had all kinds of trouble getting around screens set up to free guys at the 3 line, and SLU knocked those down. If the Niners respond to that quicker, then maybe it’s a closer game and they dont have so far to come back.
  4. Played a lot with a four guard lineup, leaving Nickerson or Williams to cover Evans and also to rebound. I suppose the strategy was to try to get more offensive punch than playing Clark more, but it gave up easier baskets to Evans and allowed some offensive rebounds I think Clark clears. I’m not sure that was the best strategy, but then maybe Evans goes off anyway, the D wasn’t bad, just a little short.

Overall a decent season, much better than I expected, but not the surprise I was secretly hoping for. I think guys can build on this, but they need to keep motivated in the offseason to really improve several parts of their games. Hopefully get an interesting matchup in the NIT to keep getting more experience.
