Samford gets 12th SoCON spot...but

Playing in the SOCON for football only would be an excellent idea. It would be a step backwards for bball, but the SOCON is the best 1AA football conference in the country. They are by far the best. App, Furman, Chattanooga, Wofford, Ga. Southern, Western.
They are all close by and would create some natural rivalries. I know I have said that already but it would be the absolute best thing that could happen to us football wise if we could get in there. If we can’t get in the Socon for football then the next best option is the Big South. Their champion gets an automatic to the 1aa tourney now. Coastal Carolina has become legit and Gardner Webb is solid. Have you seen Gardner Webb’s new stadium. It is super nice.

Once again I must repeat that I don’t want to go to either for bball, but for football only.
Does anyone know if Davidson has any plans to play football in the SoCon? You would think the switch would be just a matter of time, but I haven’t heard or seen any news indicating that they want to play football in that league.
Davidson’s decision to go to non-scholarship football is what got them kicked out of the SoCon for a few years in the early '90s before they were allowed to return in all sports but football (they now play football in the Pioneer League with A-10 member Dayton). I haven’t heard anything about the Wildcats considering a return to offering scholarships for football, which in turn would allow them to rejoin the SoCon in football as well.

BTW, the last time the Wildcats won a game in the NCAA men’s hoops tourney – 1969 when they made it to the Elite 8!!! Also the same year the Wildcats played in the Tangerine Bowl (now the Capital One Bowl played at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando).

Well, there goes our chance to join the SoCon! I guess the Observer will have to start calling for our membership in the Big South conference.

Actually, we missed that boat.

The Observer is now going to cover Samford as the #1 team in the region, since they have shown the initiative to position themselves on the fast-track to a Big East invite.

hey, my cousin goes to samford, interesting…

anyway - definately agree with the going to SoCon for football - i think its a good spot to start before moving to D1-A - my only question is, as much as we laugh at App. ever going D1-A, do we think that we would have the potential to be in their position in the future? Or do we think with a solid season we would move up? Either way there isnt a better choice than SoCon that i can think of, so i def. think that would be a great move football wise.

and im sure those questoins were probably posted on in another thread, but whatever

This just in… Samford > Charlotte with their membership into the SoCon.

Just found out that Samford is building a new $32 million, 5,000 seat (all fixed seats, as opposed to Davidson’s mix of fixed and bleachers) arena that will open next fall.

While still not as big as Chattanooga’s arena (11,000+), probably will be the nicest facility in the SoCon.

BTW, CofC is supposed to be renovating Kresse Arena, which will expand it to 5,000 seats as well. Not sure that project has begun though.

I can’t believe someone dissed the SoCon. They rule D1-AA.
That’s who we’d want to have our team with.

You're kidding right? You actually WANT to be in the SoCon? Holy crap...:fastgun:

Guess what, you are not a small, private school - the SoCon does not want UNC-C :argue:

Yeah, bc small, private schools are the only schools that are in the SoCon. I especially like the fact that App St., Western Carolina, and UNC-G are now small, private schools. That was a good first post on this board bud. Keep it up.

Which is why the Southern Conference extended an invitation to Charlotte after we left C-USA?

I hadn’t heard that the SoCon is kicking out AppState, CofC, The Citadel, Georgia Southern, UNCG, UT-Chattanooga, and Western. That’s over half its membership!!!

We would probably bring down the So-Cons RPI. Hell, they own us.

Here are the “numbers” for the SoCon members:

Appalachian State University / Public / 15,117 students
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga / Public / 10,286 students
The Citadel / Public / 3,200 students
College of Charleston / Public / 11,320 students
Davidson College / Private / 1,700 students
Elon University / Private / 5,230 students
Furman University / Private / 3,100 students
Georgia Southern University / Public / 16,500 students
University of North Carolina at Greensboro / Public / 16,100 students
Western Carolina University / Public / 10,491 students
Wofford College / Private / 1,232 students

Yep, an exclusive bunch of small, private colleges!

You guys missed my point. I did not say or mean to imply that the SoCon was already made up of small private colleges. I said that since UNCC is “not a small private college” the (new) SoCon does not want you. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

The last few new members to join the SoCon has been small private schools, and with the addition of Samford, the SoCon will be now have 5 private schools and 7 public schools. Most likely in the next 5 or 6 years, we expect both ASU and GSU to move up to 1A football, therefore leaving the conference. If that happens, the numbers will then be 5 and 5. There is lots of speculation on what the other public schools would do, but most fans don’t think their school (the football schools) will stay in the SoCon without ASU and GSU.

Most of the public school fans think that the SoCon’s long range goal is to morph into something like the Ivy League of the South. The addition of Samford has increased both ASU and GSU’s fan base to become more vocal about moving up.

If you read any of the SoCon member boards, you would have found the fans pretty much split into two groups in supporting or opposing Samford’s membership. Those in the private schools supported Samford and most of those in the public schools (especially the football schools) opposed Samford membership.

Good luck on that one.
