Sean Phaler - 2006 SF

Charlotte just got a commitment from 6-9 forward Sean Phaler from the class of 2006.
He will have two years of eligibility when he arrives at Charlotte, and should give the Niners another outside threat with his shooting ability.

not only will he give us a outside threat but also a inside threat. He is 6’9 and we need some height for our team.

from ninerreport.com:

"Fullerton College forward Sean Phaler will be switching coasts next season. Phaler has committed to play for the Charlotte 49ers next year. Few players have taken a longer road to Division One hoops.

“Out of high school, he signed with UCLA, signed with Steve Lavin,” Fullerton coach Dieter Horton explained. “Then Lavin got fired and they brought Ben Howland in. He basically just said, ‘We’re going in a different direction,’ and let him go. The kid took one visit to New Mexico, went to New Mexico.”

If the story ended there, it wouldn’t be all that unusual. But, of course, it doesn’t.

“The day before he was going to sign, he got in an almost deadly car accident,” Horton said. “He was about a minute from death, broke his back, flipped his car, spent his freshman year at New Mexico in rehab. This past year as a freshman he played some games for them.”

Phaler played in 27 games for the Lobos, averaging 2.5 points and one rebound a night. And then misfortune struck Phaler again.

“His dad got prostate cancer and I think, most of all, he just got a little spooked. He and his dad were real close, he said, 'I’m coming back to SoCal be close to my dad.”

Horton and Phaler had known each other for more than a decade, so the Fullerton coach welcomed the 6-foot-9 shooter with open arms.

“His recruiting was USC and that is it. Nobody else outside of Southern Cal,” Horton said. “In July alone I cannot even tell you how many people I said no to. Everyone in the world wanted him and he said no.”

That changed when Horton talked to one of his friends, an assistant coach at Charlotte. Turns out, Phaler had some family in the Charlotte area.

“He started looking into it and Charlotte in July came out and watched him play,” Horton said. “They fell in love and put on a full court press for the kid. They kept pressing on him and recruited the heck of him. Bobby Lutz has a great reputation and he found out about that, started looking into it. The kid took his visit and he loved it and he committed.”

And just like that, Phaler will continue his basketball career with a Division One scholarship. It’s a remarkable story, but it takes some focus away from the fact that Lutz and his staff landed a very solid player.

“He is an NBA shooter. Unbelievable shooter,” Horton said. “He shoots the heck out of it. Thin and he’s never gonna get thick, just his body type. Wiry strong and he’s very bouncy, very athletic.”

Phaler’s game is mostly on the perimeter. Ten of his 18 field goals as a Lobo were three-pointers. But Horton says that the 195-pounder can play down low as well.

“He has a post up game, has some toughness to him. He’s got a hook, fallaway jumper, he is skilled in the block,” said the coach. “But that wasn’t why Charlotte recruited him. From what I’ve been told, there isn’t a 6-9 kid anywhere that shoots the ball like he does.”

Phaler is the sixth commit in the Charlotte class of 2006."

who is the 5 commitment? because i’ve only counted 4 previous to that.

I was wondering were the connect was.
Thin and he’s never gonna get thick, just his body type.
I’m sure Preston Greene will have something to say about that.

I’ve now updated his information in the 2006 Recruiting Thread.

and we wonder why we get called a midmajor by some....

His original list of suitors included:

New Mexico
Oregon
Pepperdine
San Diego State
UC Irvine
UCLA
USC
Washington

Actually, that current group of suitors is pretty solid too. Doesn’t matter to me if they’re Big 6/BCS conference or not. Afterall, we’re talking hoops here, not football. And, of course, we know how bad football is at Southern Cal… :stuck_out_tongue:

It sounds like he is our version of Steve Novak.

Can he guard the 2 or 3?

bad but funny photoshop, maybe paint. This guy is skinny, nickname “Bones”

Funny as hell! I may have a new favorite player next year.

The article makes it sound like he’ll be easy to cheer for - I love guys who play all-out. Plus, with all the bad stuff he’s been through, it’d be nice for us to give him a big time welcome.

BONES! BONES! BONES!
Bones had an infectious style of play that had many fans chanting his name when he came in and despite his physical size played some of the toughest ball on the Lobo basketball team this year.
He’s going to be fun to watch for sure. Definitely a different type of guy for us. I hear Anderson is also a unigue dude. West Coast all the way.

fullerton college website is terrible. I mean i know its a half step up from high school but come on, the last article was written in Jan. for basketball. From what i have gathered using other teams websites and the little info from their site has (its updated in some parts), he doesnt play much, and the only box score i have found he was 2 of 3 behind the arc.

When did we start recruiting the west so heavily?

We need shooters. Badly. From anywhere.

Judging from what I read, sounds like this guy plays with a lot of heart. Can’t wait to see him in action.

Last game he had 19 including 3 3-pointers to lead all scorers taking his team to 18-0.
His school website as far as box scores sucks.

lead the team with 20 points in the final regular season game. his team is 31-0
